Beyond excited to share that my #progressionfantasy Webserial An Empire of Silk and Bone is posted on Royal Road. 156k words and 568 pages to date. The first big step (aside from actually writing the chapters) on my path to becoming an author! www.royalroad.com/fiction/1053...

I saw this the other day and can't stop thinking about it!

Currently reading The Lonesome Crown by Brian Lee Durfee after some time away from books 1 and 2. The good? Great worldbuilding, intriguing grimdark tone, complex themes. The okay? Characters feel flat at times and their trauma often overshadow their agency. 4.25 stars for the series. #booktok

Over the weekend I finished books 2 and 3 in Heretical Fishing by Haylock Jobson. An excellent cozy progression fantasy. Compelling characters. Regular additions to the 'animal pals' and a continually fun vibe carries this one for me. I give the series 4.5 stars and can't wait for book 4. #booksky

A coworker told me last week they are staunchly anti-Nazi especially since their travel to Germany and tours of the concentration camps. We agreed that praising Hitler is never okay for public leaders. We agreed internment camps are wrong. Only time will tell if they regret voting for trump anyway.

I know it is just screaming into a void, but remember the days when Republicans were so up in arms about the use of executive orders as 'unconstitutional'? When they spoke of the importance of legislative accomplishments over executive ones? Odd that line of thought vanishes when they take power.

Love this quote from Wandering Inn Chapter 10.31, its how I feel about the characters in the story: "It was like how Saliss described The Wandering Inn. Meeting strangers and seeing them as real, living people rather than another face in the crowd. Meeting individuals, not strangers."

Regarding the #Wanderinginn chapter 10.31: It amazes me how Pirateaba continues to enhance and grow my love and respect for characters that have been around since the start. Magnolia Reinhart is becoming an all time great character. Reading Vol's 1, 2, or 3. I would never have guessed.

It can be hard to explain or talk about the Wandering Inn to non-fans as someone who is caught up with the series and reads along with the new chapters as they come out. I say 'chapters' but they rarely feel like that. Are chapters usually 25k+ words? It's a problem unique to the Wandering Inn.

Loving this quote from James Clear (author of Atomic Habits) 3-2-1 Newsletter from this week: "The source of healthy boundaries is self-love and self-respect. When you learn to love yourself, you are less likely to put up with people who don't love you back." If you haven't subscribe to it!

If another Republican tries to tell me that Democrats are worse for the economy I might snap. Turns out, republicans have a long history of raising unemployment once they take office, create a recession, then, once the democrats fix the problem, they blame it on them anyways.

Just went through my Spotify and selected "Do not allow this artist to play" for Carrie Underwood, Village People, Lee Greenwood, Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts, Kid Rock, Billy Ray Cyrus. Turns out, we don't need to support folks who support fascists, even tacitly.

I've been getting into chess recently and I'm not sure if the process of learning various chess openings and theory is exciting or terrifying. Maybe a bit of both. I am starting with the London System and Kings Indian Defense. Hoping to learn more every day and improve my game.

I keep coming back to the ideas of Daniel Gilberts book Stumbling on Happiness. My biggest takeaway? We project our current emotions and mental outlook onto the future, often poorly. Even if I am currently sad, it doesn't mean I will be when the future arrives. Excellent psychology book.

Civility is a two-way street—except in politics, where it often becomes a one-way expectation, demanded by one side and disregarded by the other. Republican hypocrisy has been their hallmark for decades, just as Democrats have been defined by their reluctance to take decisive action.

If you haven't heard Messy by Lola Young yet, you are missing out. My partner and I have been jamming to Messy non-stop in 2025 and I cannot get it out of my head.

After that confirmation hearing I have to wonder, what would be disqualifying for Pete Hegseth? Torture? Sexual Assault? Domestic Violence? Repeated mismanagement of business funds? Alcoholism? Sexism? Racism? Apparently those are fine... Do the Republicans draw a line in the sand anywhere?

For those who are curious after Hegseth failed to name any nation in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) during the qualification hearing yesterday, the nations Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam were the right answer.

As we continue to hear about how Wildfire victims don't deserve federal aid, at least not without strings attached, I come back to the relative costs of hurricanes, which we do support, vs. the fires that are supposedly such a problem and concern.

Many folks don't realize just how quickly the insurance industry is being exposed to the impacts of climate change. People wonder why insurance costs more than it used to, simply look at this chart of natural disaster costs in billions over time. When this graph goes up, so do your rates.

Hearing co-workers in the break room talk about how Californian's don't deserve aid for the wildfires is a real trip after those same people were furious that Biden 'refused' to help red states after the hurricanes this fall. Which is it? We can politicize disasters or we can't?

Taking some time today to spotlight the Magic the Gathering Commander Decks I love in my collection: 1) Krenko Mob Boss: Because it turns out, doubling gets out of hand really quick. 2) Kambal, Profiteering Mayor: Your tokens become 'our' Tokens. 3) Rin and Seri, Inseperable: Cats AND Dogs? I'm in.

Been thinking a lot lately about Giorgio Agamben's ideas about the State of Exception. As we hear daily talk about a "crisis" on the border, an "invasion", and the "enemy within", I wonder how long it takes before Agamben's warnings become a reality.

What is it about cats that makes them love sitting on boxes?

Last night I watched the senate confirmation hearings for Hegseth on C-Span for hours and I have to say yikes. At the very least, Hegseths admission he was a guard at Guantanamo when torture came up as a topic explains the drinking problem. Turns out, torturing folks is bad for ones mental health.

I just passed 150,000 words written in my first fantasy novel. Feeling great about the benchmark! Five years ago I would have scoffed at the idea of being a fantasy writer, now, I am just proud of every bit of progress I make. Find the ongoing story at EmpireofSilkandBone.com #progressionfantasy

The #Wanderinginn has a special place for how firmly its character's believe in doing the right thing and work towards that. So much of the plot is Erin doing the right thing, even when that is the hard thing. No Killing Goblins. The Wandering Inn is overflowing with empathy, it's its best trait.

Books I am thinking about rereading in 2025: ~ Gods of Blood and Powder - Last read in 2019 - For the characters ~ The Prince of Nothing - Last read in 2018 - for the worldbuilding ~ Bastion - Last read in 2021 - to remember the plot to keep reading

Top Malazan Quotes: "'Aye.’ It’s a good word, I think. More a whole attitude than a word, really. With lots of meaning in it, too. A bit of ‘yes’ and a bit of ‘well, fuck’ and maybe some ‘we’re all in this mess together’. So, a word to sum up the Malazans." - Malazan, Dust of Dreams - Chapter 17

Top Malazan Quotes: "Rallick frowned at Raest. ‘The house,’ he said, ‘it is your prison, too.’ A desiccated shrug that made bones squeak. ‘The stresses of owning property.’" - Malazan, Toll the Hounds - Chapter 3 It just makes me chuckle.

Fantasy Character Talk: I can't stop thinking Ben Styke and his adopted rascal daughter from Gods of Blood and Powder and wanting more of THAT dynamic. Maybe its the similar relationship in Silverblood Promise, but I need to good back and re-read that trilogy.

As we go into 2025 and the new administration, I am thinking about taking another go at The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson. The anti-imperialist, pro-queer themes may hit a bit harder in 2025. A tragedy all the way through.

I think The Bound and the Broken series was designed for everyone who loved Eragon but wished the books got better rather than worse with each publication. Cahill's singlehandely revived the farmer to dragon riding hero fantasy for me. If you like Eragon, don't sleep on these!

Fantasy Series Spotlight: A Practical Guide to Sorcery by Azalea Ellis is an excellent blend of magical school and urban crime fantasy with a well written and realized cast of characters. For lovers of Harry Potter and every magical school book we have slurped up since. Under-rated and under-read.

I started a reread of the Practical Guide to Evil by Erratic Errata in 2024 and if you like haven't read this webserial you are missing out. Its snarky with an excellent cast of characters and top notch worldbuilding. It makes me laugh and smile everytime I start to turn the page.
