we salute onto dr king, and we.. turn onto king dr? as of january 15, 2024, there are 996 streets named after martin luther king jr in america alone. there are plenty more in other countries, however, ranging from vietnam to tunisia. drive safe, and happy martin luther king jr. day!

before detroit, were there any lions in america? yes! american lions lived during the last ice age, with these offshoots of eurasian cave lions being a little bigger than the modern african lion. they died off around 10,000 years ago, likely evolving into the modern detroit variants we have today.

DADDY-O

denial's not just a river in egypt--but is dehayeor? "nile" is a name derived from the greek Neilus, which comes from a semitic root, "nahal," meaning river. but in egypt, it was called a few different things! in ancient egyptian, it was called 'hapyj' or 'jatrw,' and in coptic, it was '(ph)iaro.'

happy birthday to me! ..or is it? in christian tradition, birthdays aren't supposed to be celebrated; in fact, they were considered pagan and unacceptable! even today, some sects--like jehovah's witnesses--don't celebrate them at all! but i can still celebrate octavian's crowning today, right?

why do a rainforest in south america and a tribe of women in greece share the same name? while a spanish conquistador nwas sailing the amazon river, he battled with warriors (of the waikana) who were led by women; this reminded him of the myth of the amazons, and so he named the river after them

pronunciation guide to quetzalcoatl: the "que" sounds like a "ke," instead of "kwe." the whole "quetzal" part is a perfect rhyme with "pretzal." coatl is how most people pronounce it, like co-ed but with co-atl. the whole word should rhyme with "pretzal low bottle," with an emphasis on the 'bot'

On the 6th Day of Christmas, my true love brought to me... ...6 Philosophers.

update while fact checking that last post i found this tecumseh tea towel

imo, one of the coolest american names ever is "william tecumseh sherman," the infamous leader of sherman's march. his middle name was derived from the legendary shawnee chief tecumseh, and it was reported that he was named this because of how much his soldier father respected the native leader.

If you see this just know you’re a precious gift

last christmas i gave you my heart and the very next day the sun came up all in all, the sacrifice went great!

how to tell an aztec (nahuatl) word from a mayan: nahuatl words usually have a 'tl,' 'cuau,' 'cui,' 'zco,' 'hua/e,' or ends in -c / -co some examples are xochitl, anahuac, cuauhtli mayan is a bit simpler to recognize examples: Kʼinich Yax Kʼukʼ Moʼ, Kʼahkʼ Ukalaw Chan Chaak

nahuatl word for today: "nacacua." it means '(to) eat flesh.' ever felt like someone on the internet is boring? feel free to nacacua them

which xibalban lord of death are you?

norse psychologists knew where it was at. while the greeks were arguing over the metaphysical nature of thought and the imperfect nature of memory, the norse were just like "birds. but but but COOL birds" huginn and muninn--"thought" and "memory"--two of odin's ravens

TIL that in 1843 the artist George Catlin accompanied 14 Báxoje (Iowa) on a tour of Britain, and they were so horrified by the poverty they saw everywhere that when some clerics asked to talk to them about sending missionairies among the Báxoje their leader Neumonya really let them have it.

After the Council of Trent, Michelangelo’s Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel was deemed too racy, and painter Daniele da Volterra was given the disreputable job of painting draperies to cover up the nudity, earning him the nickname “Il Braghettone" ("the breeches-maker") #earlymodern

i think my best video game pitch of all time would be a take on the myth of xbalanque and hunahpu, who have to play ball with the lords of death to avenge their dad, who also played ball with the lords of death and lost. think Hades, but instead of stabbing baddies you're shooting hoops

this is a real wiphala preserved in the museum of world culture; pixel artists didn't start with keys and computers, but with quilts in the inca empire!

here's some of history's oldest pixel art, the banners, or wiphala, of the four provinces of the inca empire! these are digital recreations of the actual wiphala; they were intentionally made to reflect the colors of the rainbow, and each province had their own slightly unique design.
