before detroit, were there any lions in america? yes! american lions lived during the last ice age, with these offshoots of eurasian cave lions being a little bigger than the modern african lion. they died off around 10,000 years ago, likely evolving into the modern detroit variants we have today.

happy birthday to me! ..or is it? in christian tradition, birthdays aren't supposed to be celebrated; in fact, they were considered pagan and unacceptable! even today, some sects--like jehovah's witnesses--don't celebrate them at all! but i can still celebrate octavian's crowning today, right?

why do a rainforest in south america and a tribe of women in greece share the same name? while a spanish conquistador nwas sailing the amazon river, he battled with warriors (of the waikana) who were led by women; this reminded him of the myth of the amazons, and so he named the river after them

pronunciation guide to quetzalcoatl: the "que" sounds like a "ke," instead of "kwe." the whole "quetzal" part is a perfect rhyme with "pretzal." coatl is how most people pronounce it, like co-ed but with co-atl. the whole word should rhyme with "pretzal low bottle," with an emphasis on the 'bot'

imo, one of the coolest american names ever is "william tecumseh sherman," the infamous leader of sherman's march. his middle name was derived from the legendary shawnee chief tecumseh, and it was reported that he was named this because of how much his soldier father respected the native leader.
