My thoughts on last night's USWNT performance against Japan, with comments from Emma Hayes.

'Our future is exciting' Despite the second-place finish at the SheBelieves Cup, USWNT head coach Emma Hayes remains optimistic about the side's development. @evandavissports.bsky.social analyzed the team's performance in their loss to Japan, with choice words from Hayes.

Emma Hayes speaking to the U.S. broadcast postgame: "[Japan] learned a lot since the summer playing us in the Olympics. Their ability to break pressure is probably the best in the world. Everyone understands everything within their game. They were a higher level to us throughout the whole evening."

Post-game snapshot of #USWNT - Japan Score: 1 - 2 xG: 1.1 - 1.75 xG/Shot: 0.12 - 0.18 Box Shots: 6 - 6 Box Touches: 18 - 17 Field Tilt: 48 - 52 A finely poised affair, except for the fact that Japan created much better chances across 90 minutes.

Gonna quickly compare some deep-lying playmakers and...oh. #USWNT

The aggressiveness and coordination of the Tanaka-Fujino-Momiki press has been so impressive so far. #USWNT | #SheBelieves

This is for like five people

Rebeca Bernal's signing was finally announced by the Washington Spirit. Jonatan Giráldez now has three international center backs for two positions. Which two will be the best fit? @evandavissports.bsky.social dug into the data to find some answers.

We should lose the WC and Olympics over this

Though Casey Krueger has intimated that her USWNT may be over for now, she was in some of the best form of her professional life when she last appeared for the side. @evandavissports.bsky.social spoke with Krueger last December about "the most fun" she had been having in her career.

Make the necessary "for a mid-table WSL club" adjustments to these numbers and...ok then.

Some data on USWNT - Colombia at SheBelieves last night xG: 2.0 - 0.6 xG/Shot: 0.20 - 0.09 Box Shots: 7 - 6 Box Touches: 26 - 22 Field Tilt: 63 - 37 Colombia got in the box late in the second half, but this was awfully comfortable from an experimental U.S. XI

Nine players over 30 and it's showing.

"Part of the interview process was for each candidate to enter Parsons' office doing the 'Oh Hi Mark' scene from THE ROOM. 'The best-worst performance will really increase your chances,' Parsons shared."

Don't let it get bogged down in the MLS previews, Evan and Eric hit up the SheBelieves roster + some NWSL transfer news over at @xowngoals.bsky.social Wherever you get pods: www.americansocceranalysis.com/podcasts/202...

LFG

At this time a year ago, only 46 college players had signed professional contracts. This year? 116. @evandavissports.bsky.social analyzed the data and spoke with Meghann Burke of the @nwslplayers.bsky.social about how the elimination of the NWSL draft has already been a massive success for players.

Basic stats for every WUSA and WPS season are now on @fbref.com. Great day in the morning.

Oy gevalt

In 787 minutes against ranked opposition last year, Boeckmann won 75% of her defensive duels and only lost the ball in her own half twice per 96', per Wyscout. 12.3 recoveries, too. She wins the ball and she keeps the ball. Could be a good backup to Sam Coffey if she can level up to the pros.

Get 'em both working in Stamford Connecticut to complete the set

Sadly not applicable to women's leagues/teams/players, but FBRef still has six women's leagues with full advanced data (for now).

In NWSL facilities talk, it’s remarkable to hear Stars players talk about how it’s radically changed their days for the better now that the Fire no longer train in Bridgeview. They get mornings on the pitch, they don’t get rushed out, it’s a remarkable positive change for them.

For any folks who lack context: www.elcorreo.com/deporte-feme... Also the club made a statement and here is a translated version:

Bebar in 1106 minutes vs. ranked NCAA D1 teams last year, per Wyscout. Needs to keep possession in her own half a bit better, but for a 23-year-old college central mid, the kid can ball.
