Yassin al-Haj Saleh has a superb ability to grasp essences - his latest article offers a great example of this: aljumhuriya.net/en/2025/02/2...

So pleased to see the launch of this new initiative commemorating a special academic-activist and political scientist, who left us far too soon: Samer Soliman Book Award mailchi.mp/373799711d7b...

This is one of the most effective, concise indictments of what's wrong in the US liberal establishment that one could hope for, by Barnett Rubin, on race (with a note on antisemitism): The New York Times Doesn't See Race open.substack.com/pub/appointe...

Political scientist Barnett R. Rubin on Zionism in historical perspective—how its dreams of liberation and self-determination became entangled with colonialism.

‘By the end of 1949 the Dutch had killed almost a hundred thousand Indonesians – twenty for every soldier they had lost – and war crimes had claimed more lives than regular combat.’ @vincentbevins.bsky.social on the Indonesian revolution: www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Today marks 60 years since Malcolm X was assassinated. A lovely quote about his time in Egypt on the wall tiling of Harlem's 110th Street 2/3 subway station. “I lived in Egypt. I stayed in Egypt, and I was among brothers & I felt the spirit of brotherhood.” (photo by @asadfromnyc.bsky.social)

“I had been thinking about Trump more as Erdogan’s Turkey, a competitive authoritarian regime with deck stacked to ensure ruling party always wins, ruler bends constitution to his whim through compliant courts and parliament, opposition at risk of arrest.” abuaardvark.substack.com/p/king-trump...

Does geeking out about Middle East & Mediterranean politics in Barcelona- one of the world's grooviest cities- sound like your jam? If so, then join us from June 30-July 4. Application details are below. ⬇️⛱️✍🏼 I'm already jealous of anyone who'll take @yezidsayigh.bsky.social's Palestine course!

One of the most horrifying stories to come out of this war of extermination. I posted the Hebrew reporting a few days ago, here it is in English. www.972mag.com/gaza-human-s...

🚨Breaking🚨 Uni of Lausanne now holds the sad title of being the first university in Switzerland to fire (sorry, "not renew the contract") of a professor, my friend and comrade Prof Joseph Daher, for his solidary with the pro-palestinian students. Sign in solidarity here 👇 clads.ch/solidarite-e...

I love both Joe Sacco's and Art Spiegelman's graphic novels, so good to see them come together to grapple with Israel and Gaza www.nybooks.com/articles/202...

Carnegie's Beirut office has set up a page collecting all their Syria output. They have some really first-rate experts on their team, so take a look: carnegieendowment.org/middle-east/... @carnegiemec.bsky.social @carnegieendowment.org

Breathtaking historical illiteracy combined with multiple levels of dehumanisation. At least 1 million people died and more than 15 million people were displaced as a consequence of partition, followed by decades of trauma.

My review of Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza: A Reckoning by Peter Beinart jacobin.com/2025/02/zion... Blending biblical critique with political observations, it rethinks the meaning of Jewishness today.

What a world of difference there is between the lameness of UK PM Starmer and his cabinet appointees, and what the UK truly needs - and not just on Israel/Palestine, but in every domain at home! www.thenational.scot/politics/249...

We should all aim to have as much moral courage as the FCDO's Mark Smith, who exposed how UK ministers stall, distort & obscure official processes to create a facade of legitimacy, while allowing the most egregious crimes against humanity to take place. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I wonder: will the US still be a member of the UN by the end of Trump’s term? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Vali and I have discussed this periodically since October 2023. And have always come to this end conclusion/assessment. It’s why I’ve refused analysis that gave Biden the benefit of the doubt: he has always been ideologically tied to and supportive of this effort.

In the early 1990s HIV/AIDS was devastating many African countries. In Kenya, by 1997 we had a 10% prevalence rate mean b that one in every 10 Kenyans was HIV positive, and we weren’t even the worst off. Botswana at its peak had a prevalence rate of 25%. It was a terrifying time to come of age.

There is a record of everything. This administration has been shameless, completely unhinged.

”An Israeli investigation could have led to the case being handed back to Israeli courts under so-called complementary principles. Israel can still demonstrate its willingness to investigate, even after warrants were issued.” Anthony Deutsch, @reuters.com: www.reuters.com/world/middle...

Gaza ceasefire proved the obvious: the US has leverage Incoming president Trump used this power & achieved his goal of securing a deal before inauguration Outgoing president Biden didn't exercise his influence, allowing the war to drag on for 15 months www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Graphic novel time! Newest work by Joe Sacco.
