Heading to the F1 The Movie press screening (as an F1 fan) and my wife asked what I needed for the movie to succeed in my eyes... Well, dear reader, without hesitation I said "it would need to be better than SPEED RACER" (and I freaking love SPEED RACER)

It might be 2am, but when @thejoelynch.bsky.social sends a special video message to Screenland Armour before a FRIDAY THE 13TH (🎶Thank God It's Friday🎶) Mystery Double, imploring people to watch FRIDAY THE 13TH PART V: A NEW BEGINNING, then you sacrifice sleep and you do that...if you're me.

First up was Part III which the audience ate up Then the wheel was spun again and stopped for a moment on number 8...and as the audience was mixed the wheel slowly rolled back and landed on... FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE FINAL CHAPTER. A perfectly magical double feature

It's Friday the 13th, which means I'm out at Screenland Armour in KC, where @nightmarejunkhead.bsky.social are hosting a SOLD OUT (!!) FRIDAY THE 13TH double feature mystery roulette. What films will be shown? Who knows but it will be amazing.

It's only June and it feels as if this year has been 3 bad ones smashed together. Just too many overwhelmingly distraught things compiling on top of each other. Hate admitting but that's just where things are now. I just want to be able to breathe easily for one day.

I worry that recommendation algorithms may be getting too good.

Been sitting with THE PHOENICIAN SCHEME for around 3 weeks & think I'm ready to call it my favorite Wes Anderson film. There's something unexpected about it that just connected with how this year has gone for me & was really really what I needed in a film. www.thepitchkc.com/auteur-wes-a...

Today’s Terror Teletype: a year without this dearly departed sonofabitch. manage.kmail-lists.com/subscription...

RIP George Wendt, remember the time he stopped by on Late Night with Conan O'Brien's debut episode to leg wrestle John Goodman

it's actually incredible how much shit we still post about and riff off that originated with Conan goddamn O'Brien

As with any movie screening, I end up putting on a movie when I get home, to unwind. Tonight's choice is inspired by one moment in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - THE FINAL RECKONING, which most won't get until they see the film. Now Watching: THE ABYSS

Not for nothing: if you live in KC (or even of you don't!) and want to support non-AI generated local reporting on LOTS of stuff, including local politics, arts and culture, @thepitch.bsky.social would love to have you.

happy mother's day

Last week was rather rough. My wife had minor surgery & the labs results meant I've learned words like atypical hyperplasia & precancerous & how the 2 can put your significant other at high risk due to other health factors, unless serious action is taken. Surgery is set, but emotions remain high.

It's kind of ridiculous when you realize that things in the world are so bad that it makes you ambivalent to stuff in general. Been dealing with some not great news *it'll be ok, hopefully, in a few months* with the attitude of "whatever" & don't like that. I just wanna watch movies & be happy.

Don't forget about the one from 2024, too.

My wife told me since it was my birthday to choose a movie she'd never seen before. I decided upon a classic I hadn't revisited in a few years & would serve as a good distraction from thoughts of getting older. #NowWatching: CLUE

I'm tired. This week has been exhausting due to work, health, mind pondering future endeavours & upcoming discussions with people that will feel like I'm talking to a void... At least I've finally watched all 4 THE ROUNDUP flicks, as of today. Those movies are beauties.

One of the strange things about the streaming push these last couple of years, has been a divide in terms of quality that feels similar to DTV offerings from decades ago. Only the efforts now are typically blander than the weird films that made that heyday so much fun. Let movies be weird!

Days into this flu/cold (still neg for COVID) & can't sleep much, get comfortable, switching rooms...and the one thing that keeps playing over & over in my head is this... (I just hope ALL these blankets can save me)

It's not COVID, but I have some type of Con Crud that's kicking my ass. Loved Panic Fest & the majority of films I saw, but this is the dumps (says the person who normally avoids getting sick post-festival)

Just a little homemade dirty chai to kickstart the brain & do some writing before heading into Day 4 of Panic Fest.

Why do I enjoy Panic Fest being in Kansas City? Because not only do you get to see FREAKY TALES with a sold out crowd on the big screen, you also get @thejoelynch.bsky.social hosting a Q&A with directors Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden.

Maybe it's possibly becoming slightly desensitized to the subgenre (unlikely) or maybe it's seeing & enjoying so many small & low budgeted slashers, that when a film is derivative without anything else besides hitting check boxes, you might be disappointed. Then you see a film that cheers you up

It's one of the best times of year, when Panic Fest pulls out the special red carpet for Joe @thejoelynch.bsky.social & Becca's super highly anticipated SECRET SCREENING! (It's a double feature again!!) It's... WHITE FIRE & THE TAKING OF BEVERLY HILLS

Had the pleasure of introducing CHAINSAWS WERE SINGING at Panic Fest! Saw it originally at Fantasia, then Fantastic Fest & now got to see it with a home crowd. Such a fun, weird & wild film, that the audience ate up!

Paul Rudd may have a movie opening wide this weekend, but only in Kansas City, for the start of PANIC FEST could you see where it all began with a 4K screening of HALLOWEEN: THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS!

The devil works fast but Dr. Chuck Tingle works faster.

Ahh, Irish Folklore, you beautiful movie subgenre. You know exactly how to take things liberally, by having some pacing issues or keeping elements too far away, yet you still suck me in & can make an expected or predictable ending land solidly. Well played.

When I took the dog out at 6am it was 60* (felt like 63*), now getting off work it says it's 38* (feels like 28*). Spring Midwest weather makes no sense at all.

Ready to spend a few hours listening to what's likely to be a great Screen Drafts episode.

I haven't had my hair cut in a little over a year, so knew it would be a weird undertaking. Thankfully, my friend, the talented @jillsixx.bsky.social was able to do an awesome job (a Mr. Reeves & Mr. Russell inspired) letting me continue my long hair journey, in style!

Fun Oscar Winner story: Years ago I hosted a Terror Tuesday screening of THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE & before it started I was told of a director showing up & got nervous. I messed up during my intro & a voice corrected me. I sheepishly said "thanks, Sean Baker" & he said "you're doing great!"

💀

Sometimes I play sports 🤷‍♂️

Can’t believe they left Scott Wampler off the In Memoriam segment, disrespectful imo

#oscars #oscars2025 Nobody: That one French lady who won for Emilia Pérez:

A few years from now (if not tomorrow), this will be regarded as one of the worst Oscar moments of all time.
