#MSH45 | April 25, 1980 USGS geologist Pete Lipman remeasures the north flank of Mount St. Helens using a Geodimeter from Timberline. Four days earlier, he’d installed reflector targets near the bulge. Now, he can’t find them. They’ve moved. Twenty feet. In four days. Laterally.

Marjorie Taylor Greene just wanted some attention. She wanted to blow a dog whistle for her white christian nationalist supporters. She's too afraid to say the N word, the anti-gay F slur, or that "the USA is a white nation" aloud, so, sound the dog whistle! We see them for what they are, though.

Woke up to rain on the tin roof at 5am. It was so beautiful. Sending love to everybody today- I hope you have a good one.

I hope the next pope is a progressive man of color. HONEY! These American christian nationalists would lose their minds! They hated Francis because he spoke of unity and living like Jesus; something they've refused.

Had a beautiful Cardinal couple in my garden today.

Truman of St. Helens! The man and his mountain. I love this book! I’m learning so much more about ol Truman. #MountStHelens

Harry Truman was already a budding media star by late March 1980! Local papers and TV stations had interviewed him before the first eruption on March 27, but he was giving interviews daily by early April. By this point in 1980, he'd already been on the Today Show and in the NY Times.

"Is that all there is to Mount St. Helens?" asked this article from April 18, but the press and public weren't the only ones growing bored. Starting yesterday, the USGS reduced information releases to twice weekly from daily. Some staff went back to their home offices.

I just want to say thank you. Y'all, BlueSky is so nice. People are generally nice, and we all communicate and share. This is what social media is supposed to be. You're the most rad humans!

Old North Church in Boston last night on the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere's ride.

I listened to a great podcast (Interfaith voices) with Selena Fox last night before bed. She's such a good person, and done so much to further understanding and acceptance of Paganism. I've been a Pagan almost 30 years, and I'm still learning! I love it. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/i...

I've deleted Facebook & Instagram. One of my precious friends and my Mom are the only two people who interact with me there. I get tired of seeing phony. The Bible quotes when I know none of them have read a Bible, the praise of 🍊 because he hates the same people they do. YUK! So many radicalized.

So many people I know support 🍊. It's wild seeing FB posts that say things like "Veterans deserve a month, not blacks or LGBTQ". Praise for tariffs from one of my mean aunts who lives in a tiny trailer, survives on social security, and of course most of these ppl use the hard R! I block liberally!

#MSH45 | April 11 The helicopter lifts USGS's Richard Waitt and Penn State's Barry Voight over the summit. Forsyth, Leschi, and Loowit Glaciers meet in the "split blister" of the yawning crater. Pilot Lon Stickney then flies down the north flank. “We careen down as if a bobsled,” recalls Waitt.

Two-party system is unviable and corrupt for awakened/awakening masses. Time for strong revolutionary change to an organized; people, planet, peace, third-party organization with visible, front-running, knowledgeable candidates in many states is NOW! Green-Party can lead change but needs momentum!

Human rights lawyer here: Let me reiterate what colleagues have said. By definition, you cannot "deport citizens" because WHERE OUTSIDE A HOME COUNTRY ARE YOU SENDING THEM? It's is not "deportation", it's "kidnapping", "human trafficking" or "forced imprisonments". These are human rights violations.

#MSH45 | April 1980 While the public was prevented from getting closer to Mount St. Helens after March 27, property owners below the peak were allowed access. Jerald Burgess visited his cabin 4 1/2 mi north of the volcano in early April, snapping these photos with his son watching an eruption.

Okay, I have something to get off my chest. Searching for Mount St. Helens on YouTube often pulls up videos by creationist groups, misusing the eruption to push young-Earth claims. Ooo, check out the AI! They can twist the story all they want. The facts still bury their claims.

It's one of my favorite photos from the stretch before May 18, so welcome to the banner this week, Pete Lipman from the USGS.

I love @npr.org so much. I really like that most of their articles have an audio option. It's great for my Mom. She's unwilling to read in depth articles, but she will always press the play button to listen.

#MSH45 | April 6, 1980 (Back on track!) And on the seventh day of the week, Easter Sunday, let there be cloud cover and quiet. Heavy snow blanketed Mount St. Helens. Visibility was low. Scientists called the ash-and-steam bursts “insignificant.” But the ground still rumbled.

#MSH45 | April 7, 1980 “Oh, boy. Wow! Now, those are large objects, say, the size of small Volkswagens or something like that... you don’t want to run into.” —Tom Benson, Portland State University geologist, reacting on ABC News to rocks hurled from Mount St. Helens today. #PDX #Portland #Geology

#MSH45 | April 1980 It was a spectacle—a steaming, smoking giant putting on a show. If you were lucky, maybe Mount St. Helens would blow its top just for you. Locals, tourists, and reporters flocked to the roadblocks, hoping to witness just that. But the mountain would keep them waiting.

#MSH45 | April 3, 1980 On camera with KGW, USGS volcanologist David Johnston warns: Mount St. Helens may unleash a major eruption — and it might not give much notice.

BREAKING everything!

Why would a leader tank his own country's economy? It's a key part of the aspiring autocrat's playbook. Tariffs & chaos mean more power & control for Trump. But America has no king. The Republican-led Congress can stop this at any time. Let your reps hear from you. 5calls.org/issue/trump-...

Just a reminder: Intentionally crashing the US economy was right there on the checklist for Project 2025 And we told you And we were told to shut up, Trump didn’t even know what Project 2025 was (because he said so! He’s so believable. Famous for his veracity!)

#MSH45 | April 2, 1980 At 7:35 a.m., a 15 minute harmonic tremor roared through the seismic network. It registered 70 miles away—and faintly at 180. Seismologists called it the clearest sign yet that magma was rising. Shorter bursts had also occurred yesterday and on March 31.

A recent report assessing the health of U.S. bird populations 🦅🕊️ presents a grim outlook: Birds in the U.S. are declining, and a third of the species — 229 to be precise — are in need of urgent conservation actions. Read:

It may be breaking, but @booker.senate.gov's voice has never been more powerful. Thank you, my friend, for speaking out for freedom, justice, and the country we love.

Somewhere in a beige room lit with buzzing fluorescents three dozen quivering Evangelicals raise their hands to God & pray for Corey Booker to fall And they will tell themselves it is spiritual warfare And they will tell themselves they’re warriors of God And they are all of them, deceived
