The overstated powers of AI make me reminiscence about days when we overstated the powers of genomics. Oh, those were the days!

I went to Career Day at my kid’s school, and I found this class-made poster in the 4th grade classroom. The next generation may be alright, folks.

Well the R16 grant submission, which helps build science infrastructure at institutions like mine, have been cancelled until further notice.

I don’t think breakfast with Dad at school had the same vibe as Mother’s Day Tea with Mom at school.

My redneck scientist brain either measures volumes in 1. Microliters 2. Swallas

@edsbs.bsky.social they’re having a Magic the Gathering tourney at my local Arby’s if you want to roll up. They have the magic, the mayhem, and the meats.

Listen, the hardest question you’ll get during a presentation is from a bunch of 1st graders! I’m glad my son’s 1st grade class was able to come by PC and learn about the big world of biology! 🧪 🧬

I put together a new post on my Substack on why it matters to enable undergraduate students to present at professional research conferences. Please check it out and let me know your thoughts. open.substack.com/pub/presbyci...

After working through several seminars on how AI fits into academia and education, it seems like AI has revealed more about people’s definition of “thinking” than anything.

For those needing an inspiring story, from a HS teacher friend: “The geometry students were building kites for a project. It has to fly to pass. A girl was flying hers when a guy walked by & broke it. She went back in the classroom, fixed it & ran back out saying “that shit still flies, bitch.””

So let it be written, so let it be done. Final grades are submitted!

A great time as always at #AACR2025. My two students learned a lot during the meeting. I’m excited to see how they do w/ one graduating & heading to MUSC for grad school and the other heading to JAX lab this summer.

I’m in Chicago. Anybody know where Wilco is playing?

I’m in my “get my house cleaned up and everyone taken care of before I leave for a conference tomorrow” Era

My kid has gone to 5 Easter Egg hunts and has found the golden egg in every one of them That’s Jordan type numbers.

A million times this but it was never an actual theory - it was a propagated fraud by someone wanting to make money off an alternative vaccine, and then people starting grasping at additional straws

I found out one of our recent graduates from Presbyterian College was awarded a NSF GRFP! Based on my memory, this is our first GRFP winner who came from our small liberal arts college. Big congrats to Kenedie!

TFW you're reading a packet of articles from The Chronicle of Higher Education and they're quoting @mattbrown.bsky.social.

Welp, this is a new one for me.

Which band had the best album that technically was released “past their prime?” My candidate;

✨CONGRATS to my UG trainee Margaret Leonard for being selected to join the Summer Research Program at JAX lab in Bar Harbor, ME. I'm excited to see how this program will shape her as a scientist, knowing students like her will help lead a bright future in spite of this discouraging present.

I honestly thought this was some new single cell data

What I did today: 1) Talked to my college roommate about T-cell therapy. 2) Submitted a manuscript. 3) Talked to another friend on how to go against right wing takes about “Big Pharma” 4) Talked to my former student about how picking their PhD lab I think I earned my science merit badge today.
