"To better understand what’s happening inside shelters, @calmatters.org requested and analyzed previously unreleased state performance data, reviewed thousands of police calls and incident reports, and interviewed more than 80 shelter residents and personnel." calmatters.org/housing/2025...

Commentary: This status quo cannot last any longer. Fossil fuel companies got us into this crisis, and now it’s time lawmakers hold them accountable by passing crucial legislation this year. cal.news/41uKIcI 📝 Nico Gardner

Another reminder that California is progressive only as a label. In its communities, conservatives, liberals and the politically homeless alike push to censor or stop lesson plans & ban books teaching students about queer culture, ethnic conflicts and racial history www.politico.com/newsletters/...

Adam Hardesty wants to convert his garage into an ADU. He got the approval of neighbors, architects and engineers, his city and a staffer at the state housing department. But in California, there's one last line of defense in the battle for local control: The HOA. calmatters.org/housing/2025...

It looks like transit advocates have established a new but timeless technique for GOP virtue signaling.

Today’s a good day to resurface this. High-speed rail is an economic project as much as it is a transit one. California’s conservative farm belt, a place the president thinks lacks water in January, views the bullet train in a much different light than Washington calmatters.org/commentary/2...

Countless California parents are gripped with fear that if they go to the store, work or school, they’ll never see their families again. In Salinas, known as “the salad bowl of the world” for its rich agricultural fields, school attendance is steadily dropping calmatters.org/education/k-...

American planes are crashing on a seemingly daily basis right now, but sure, go pretend you have the authority to do anything definitive on a project mandated by California voters, and still has majority public support.

Since the outbreak of the Los Angeles fires last month, @gavinnewsom.bsky.social has maintained an unwavering public focus on the response and recovery — a reflection of how this has become a crucial moment for his gubernatorial legacy and his future aspirations. calmatters.org/politics/202...

Support for California high-speed rail has been steady for decades. Only problem is the lack of political will from politicians. This could be done in a matter of years and in a way that staves off more cost overruns if the feds stopped being so coy and corrupted ktla.com/news/califor...

"Perez and other small business owners, allies and experts worry that a freeze could mean fewer opportunities for entrepreneurs to start and grow businesses, which could lead to fewer jobs and less spending and investment for communities ..." from @levisu.bsky.social calmatters.org/economy/2025...

A spate of new bills in California and other states would protect consumers from electricity rate hikes that subsidize data centers. cal.news/4k3Gujm 📝 Khari Johnson

School play gets canceled for "inappropriate content". In response students write [REDACTED], their own anti-censorship play skewering the school district, sells out performances, and ultimately takes gold at the Lenaea High School Theatre Festival. www.kqed.org/arts/1397192...

There were peaceful protests against Elon Musk and the Trump administration in so many California cities today, some with crowds in the thousands, including the state Capitol. Democracy isn’t rolling over. (h/t Melodic_Animal_2238 on r/Sacramento)

Ezra Klein has always been a columnist to keep in rotation but he’s become a must-read since Trump returned to power.

If more competitive basketball was the goal with this new format, the NBA spoiled any chance of that happening with all the long-ass breaks. And LeBron and Ant don’t even dress? Really?

After @calmatters.org found that a law meant to disclose who is paying for California legislators' sponsored travel was used only twice in seven years, state regulators looked into it. How they suggest fixing the law: calmatters.org/politics/202...

I did not realize getting the newest Airpods also meant committing to cleaning earwax on an almost daily basis.

Say what you will about Rob Bonta, but he uses his office to go after fossil fuel companies and corporations that harm people. Red state AGs use taxpayer money to attack coffee shops for being too female and not white enough.

Every dog being walked in Midtown is wearing a jacket and that tells you something about the type of people who call this neighborhood home. And yes, one of those people and dogs was me.

Wow. Clearly we’ve been thinking about ethnic cleansing all wrong!

Three weeks into President Trump’s second term, a clearer picture is beginning to emerge of some of the first Californians targeted in his immigration crackdown. It’s very different from the descriptions of hardened criminals he has touted. cal.news/3Qf0d1W 📝 Wendy Fry

Like his music, Kendrick's halftime show hits even better the second time around. The broadcast was the spectacle, but the performance itself was for the history books. "40 acres and a mule, this is bigger than the music"

The U.S. wants Greenland’s rare minerals. Denmark wants our avocados and Disneyland.

The richest man on the planet is trying to cut resources from the poorest people on the planet. Our institutions, including our courts and labor unions, are holding the line. If you’re looking for Democrats to save the day, you’re looking in the wrong places.

Commentary: Out of nearly 2,500 iron and steel worker apprentices registered in California, 70 are women. That’s too few, says Rocio Campos, a single mother of two from Los Angeles County who today works as an ironworker cal.news/3WGFO9F 📝 Denise Amos

One of the consequences of California voters approving Prop. 35 last fall was a budget provision Newsom approved that kept children on Medi-Cal enrolled. Restoring it will require the governor and the federal government's blessings (we know how the latter might go) calmatters.org/health/2025/...

Still in shock over the Luka/AD trade. Dallas really said “hold my beer” to every other shit NBA front office.

There appear to be at least three separately operating heel factions breaking things within the government in wholly different ways right now. There's the Miller-headed immigration one, the DOGE/Elon one, and a Project 2025 OMB one. This dynamic hasn't showed up in mainstream reporting at all.

This story floored me. I reported on the 2019 incident when LaSota "burst into public view" wearing Guy Fawkes masks and descending on a rationalist retreat in the woods. To read about what followed after is insane. Phenomenal reporting from @sfchronicle.com www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/arti...
