In the areas with systematic/preregistered work, it is a mixed bag, the app offers some effective and some ineffective techniques. Their research links are legit (although they are not always well-replicated). I think the biggest potential damage here is consumer-like emotional focus.

I guess the work on disgust driving transmission seems pretty unconcerned with reputation. I think your account has merit, but there likely are a few accounts that have merit (e.g., danger and reputation and novelty)

Yes, very difficult to strike the right balance, especially because most of the messages are not coming from professionals. It is my sense that the messages are increasingly shifting into valorizing the distress (as in something awful, but consistent with cultural ideals).

There is a certain stickiness to what is silly and arbitrary. Unless it is the APA format and you get a new set of the arbitrary every few years:)
