#BREAKING 🚨 Independent MP Monique Ryan has told the federal parliament 6 News is the "only" news channel for young people's interests and perspectives in Australia, criticising the social media ban WATCH: youtube.com/watch?v=6-mc...

I hate when they take away things you were just starting to really enjoy, like your favorite TV show or democracy.

On the VPN question, the department is suggesting that if someone uses a VPN to sign up, then the platforms would be expected to check their posts on social media to see if they're actually based where the VPN says they are.

It's clear ABC Australia & ABC News mgmt is actively ignoring audience feedback: • most program Twitter accounts were closed so public (and program-specific) feedback is discouraged • complaints to the ABC are 'acknowledged' yet there's no apology or change. • respected hosts are sacked. 😔 #ourABC?

#labor wants to kill #palmer and slow down the #greens, and the #coalition wants to kill the #independents and slow down #OneNation. it’s like, ‘you help me kill my enemy, and i’ll help you kill yours’.

Dr Helen Haines asks, if the NACC was right not to investigate Robodebt referrals, then why did Commr Holmes delay releasing her Robodebt final report just to refer to NACC? Brereton “I don’t know” “You would have to ask her”🙄 Haines “I’m still really deeply troubled by this”💥

#BREAKING 🚨 Labor has DUMPED the misinformation bill after it was guaranteed it could not pass the Senate “There is no pathway to legislate…the govt will not proceed with the Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation Bill”, communications minister Michelle Rowland says

Robodebt brought fear and misery to tens of thousands of Australians. Some killed themselves. Yet still these four arseholes escape untouched.

Bullying is a scourge of schools, workplaces, politics, sports clubs and many other places. But the worst bullies I have encountered have been high ranking Liberals. What chance do we have when the opposition leader, the alternative PM, is one of the worst culprits? #auspol

A shit bill is a shit bill, Anthony. The only thing worse than the horribly biased and pathetic legislation you tried to ram through in the last dying days of your regime,is your ability to hear your electorate. You are throwing us to the wolves, and you appear to be happy about it. #auspol

RED ALERT: The Social Media Age Ban Bill represents one of the most DANGEROUS and FAR REACHING attempts at Digital Control ever proposed in a Democratic Nation. This Thread has 13 parts. Read all of them, then get on the phone to MP's & Senators & object strenuously. bsky.app/profile/my2c...

“You can’t trust big tech, that’s why you should give them a copy of your ID” says PM chaser.com.au/national/you...

Not sure I've seen a bill more ill-thought through, and designed under the knowledge it is unworkable just because a govt is too weak to make a case against it because it is scared by FM stations and dying news.corp papers

This is Coalition level cruelty and dehumanisation. This is atrocious.

#BREAKING 🚨 Elon Musk has reacted to the federal government’s social media ban for under-16s, saying it “seems like a backdoor way to control access to the Internet by all Australians” X/Twitter would be one of one of the platforms banned under the legislation

Whoa, they are ramming through legislation now. "It will impose a means-tested resident fee of just over $100 a day, named the "non-clinical care" fee to reflect its purpose of funding food and other amenities." www.abc.net.au/news/2024-11...

If a Government is trying to rush a bill through Parliament, then odds are something fishy is going on. @amyremeikis.bsky.social explains just how the donation reform changes could reinforce the two-party system, and shut out independents and new parties. #auspol

This Parliament has not passed bills addressing the homelessness and rental crises, and other cost of living issues. But the major parties colluded this week on legislation increasing their own public funding, and making it harder for independents to be elected. Priorities.

This is why researchers are often nervous about knowledge dissemination outside the academy.

curious that the government have dropped so many of the details of the social media age verification bill ahead of its tabling in parliament, but not... its definition of social media www.abc.net.au/news/2024-11...

nb.australiainstitute.org.au/donations_bi... Please sign this petition to stop the major parties in Australia from disrupting our democracy. To send these two bills on misinformation and donations to a parliamentary enquiry. Thank you. Share widely. ASAP #auspol This is moving fast. Thank you.

LNP & ALP are determined to push this ridiculous #AgeBan through with no evidence to support it, & nobody (ESPECIALLY THE PUBLIC) in favour of it. What the hell can we do about it @davidpocock.bsky.social ? It needs a senate inquiry. Seems like a stalking horse to impose Digital ID. #auspol

Mr Speaker, I rise to inform the House that documents do in fact exist as the FOI has gone out for third party consultation. Whether the documents are released is a wait and see.

Greens senator, Sarah Hanson-Young, said a blunt age ban on social media was not the solution. “The evidence is in and it’s clear that banning young people from YouTube is not the solution,” she said. “You don’t make platforms safer by just locking young people out. "...
