Madame Matisse is out in the world today - a novel about the women behind the art and the explosive ultimatum in his marriage that led to the firing of a gun. A real event in Matisse’s life, never written about before. Until now...

Alina Habbard posted: NOTHING CAN STOP THIS MAN FROM FIGHTING FOR HIS COUNTRY. David Simon had a succinct 2-word response: “Bone spurs.”

Saddened to belatedly learn that Marika Sherwood passed away in February. Her work on Black & Asian history was widely recognised & her efforts to communicate to a wider audience, for social change. See eg her summary of the 1959 murder of Kelso Cochrane www.ourmigrationstory.org.uk/oms/murder-i...

It's always a pinch-me moment as an author to hold the finished product in your hands for the first time! Madame Matisse will be published on Thursday 6 March! Hope you enjoy reading it! Available to order here: amzn.to/4brienn

Working class people operate on a deficit (you don't have the ££ or contacts that affluence brings). Wages are piss-poor in the creative industries so the only option is to work job(s) while producing that book/screenplay etc ... most can't do that and pay bills... and the arts are poorer for it...

Today, we remember the Black People’s Day of Action on 2 March 1981 and the march of 15-20,000 people from New Cross to Hyde Park in remembrance of the 13 young people tragically lost in a fire known as the New Cross Massacre in January 1981.

RIP Marika Sherwood. Wonderful human, fantastic historian.

RIP to Dr. Marika Sherwood: a huge inspiration among historians and activists, and a founder of the Black and Asian Studies Association. Without her tireless contributions over the past few decades, the field of Black British History would look very different today. We owe her so much 🖤✊🏽

My latest for @theguardian.com, a review of 'Deviants' by Santanu Bhattacharya, an intimate epic of a novel charting the last 50 years of gay life in India. Highly commend this to you all: www.theguardian.com/books/2025/j...

“Brexit continues to haunt us. It’s posing real economic problems. The govt doesn’t like the equilibrium we’ve reached but is unwilling to do much about it…the EU feels little pressure to change the status quo” What a tedious, costly, bandwidth-consuming mess. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

2024 in books. A very good crop so it’s hard to rank them, but top of the pile was definitely Samantha Harvey’s absolutely beautiful ‘The Western Wind’. #booksky

My mentions are full of people needing help in Gaza. But the way it's reported obscures the reason they need help. This isn't a natural disaster. This is the result of war crimes by a state. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
