It is popular for people to try and understand Trump as having a Manifest Destiny viewpoint about the US. Uhh, sure. ‘Big land good’ What I think is underreported is that domestically, Trump is a Roscoe Conkling sort of character, where the spoils system is 100% back & civil service reform is dead.

It seems like the legislative branch of the federal government has completely forgot how to do the job. Forgot they have power. Too many years of play-fighting on C-SPAN; now reduced to jumping in front of news cameras, desperately hoping someone else will emerge to do something about this mess.
