After some compromise, the Michigan Legislature passed a revised version of the minimum wage/sick leave laws, which Gov. Gretchen Whitmer then signed into law late last week. In the latest episode of MichMash, we discuss reactions from each side of the aisle 🎧

We pushed back recording to Friday to make sure listeners got the most up-to-date analysis from Alethia and @cheyna-roth.bsky.social on what happened with paid sick time and minimum wage. And then Alethia interviews Rep. DeBoyer on his new role as House Oversight chair. All podcast platforms.

Win 354! Michigan State men's basketball head coach Tom Izzo has eclipsed Indiana's Bobby Knight's 353 career Big Ten wins to becoming the winningest coach in league history.

Here’s what Attorney General Dana Nessel said when Alethia Kasben asked her on this week’s MichMash about her interest in the open Michigan U.S. Senate seat. Watch the full episode at @wdet.bsky.social’s YouTube channel: youtu.be/rurEPQC3ZfI?...

Patti Tremblay got her start as one of the key people on the House clerk staff back when I was a cub reporter and has worked her way up. Soon to don a judge’s robe.

Michigan will, for the first time ever, host open-seat races for both Senate and governor next year, as @zachgorchow.bsky.social recently pointed out. Some states still have never done so, as Eric Ostermeier catalogs below

Gongwer subscribers, my Weekender column is now in your inbox. Looking at the implications of the Peters departure, of course.

Gongwer's @lilyguiney.bsky.social covered the Northern Michigan Chamber Alliance meeting today and will have a bunch of interesting coverage tonight.

Also find out how my dog reacted to my reaction to the Gary Peters news! In all seriousness, this is a strong episode if I do say so myself. All podcast platforms. @cheyna-roth.bsky.social @wdet.bsky.social

Hey @gongwermichigan.bsky.social subscribers, tonight's Michigan Report just landed in your inbox. Monster news day, I'm just glad someone actually did turn off the news firehose by 2 p.m.

My initial research indicates 2026 will be the first time Michigan, since beginning direct U.S. Senate elections in 1916, had open seats for governor and U.S. Senate in the same cycle. Skypoint to the late, great George Weeks and his magnificent "Stewards of the State" book.

If I woke up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet, I wouldn't be more surprised than I am right now.

Watching the Washington Commanders get disemboweled today after looking like a mashup of the 1988 49ers and 1985 Bears last week against the Lions.

On MichMash this week, one of the hot topics on the paid sick time law taking effect Feb. 21 … when would employees have to provide notice of taking sick time. Rep. Bill Schuette echoes employer concerns. Danielle Atkinson disagrees. Watch full episode: youtu.be/biWZkr7uJkA?...

Expanded MichMash this week! In the first segment, @cheyna-roth.bsky.social and I discuss Jocelyn Benson’s gubernatorial campaign launch. Then I speak with @danielleatkinson.bsky.social and Cheyna with Rep. Bill Schuette to discuss the paid sick time law and efforts to change it.

This week on MichMash, @cheyna-roth.bsky.social and I chat on Aric Nesbitt's bid for governor, and I include an item a Dem once shared about Nesbitt as a strategist and legislator (you'll have to listen to find out). Kim Bezy from the MI Catastrophic Claims Assn. joins in the guest segment.

What an unbelievable victory for the Wings here

Saturday tours at the Capitol are back!

Look for these Q&A pieces with the new members of the House to find out a little more about them, what committees they hope to serve on, who they're looking forward to working with and more.

The 2025-26 term has begun.

The House just formally adjourned for the remainder of the year. Only one or two members were present. Clerk Rich Brown announced the enrollment of all the Senate-passed bills from Dec. 19-20, a few other housekeeping items and then Rep. Pohutsky gaveled adjournment without day.

It’s a dreidel spin on MichMash to close out our year in review episode. How did it turn out? Watch the full episode to hear @cheyna-roth.bsky.social and I discuss our top stories of the year and look ahead to 2025: youtu.be/2qz3I1uQlnU?...

We pushed back recording to get the latest! And came close, the Senate was still going at 1 p.m. Friday. All podcast platforms! Elena Durnbaugh joins @cheyna-roth.bsky.social and me on MichMash this week to walk us through the drama in the House.

It's a testament to how unbelievable the news is right now that the attorney general of this state just accused every legislator of refusing to attend session of committing a crime, and it's like the third most significant thing in this story.

Breaking: Sen. Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit) tells Gongwer News Service she will not attend today's Senate session: "I will not be in attendance to vote for the Governor’s corporate welfare agenda while Democrats ignore priorities that impact urban communities. (1/2)

Waves of developments this evening: -Governor tells Dem leaders not to expect anymore bill signings unless they pass road funding and econ dev bills -SML Brinks says too many opportunities to focus on just one or two priorities. -Sen. Santana responds with this on Facebook:

The House had advanced 32 bills to Third Reading today that had yet to be passed. Can only assume those are casualties of the implosion.

This week on MichMash, the guests are Jane McCurry of Clean Fuels Michigan and @hannahdellinger.bsky.social of @chalkbeat.org Detroit. Not only can you listen to MichMash on any podcast platform, be sure to watch at the @wdet.bsky.social YouTube channel where I'm live at the Capitol for the opening.

Good morning, Michigan. Here's a 29-story report from @gongwermichigan.bsky.social on the MASSIVE activity in the Legislature that ended at 5:35 a.m. when the Senate adjourned until next week. Further updates forthcoming on 3 huge bill packages the Senate passed before calling it a day.

An @remhq.bsky.social lyric in "E-Bow the Letter" appropriate for this moment as the Michigan Senate remains in session. youtu.be/5cnIQHJ169s?...

Current status

Today's phrase of the day is "five-day rule." But also never forget the term "vehicle bill."

This is definitely a big deal. I will note though that one of my father's favorite sayings is "close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades." Key steps still to go but this is no quarter-turn kind of thing.

Good morning, @gongwermichigan.bsky.social subscribers. Your news team was covering all corners of the Capitol yesterday, where committees moved more than 90 bills to the House and Senate floors and much more.

We're doing this again tonight, my tired friends. Mega 23-story report landing in subscriber inboxes now.

This is now very 2018-esque, the question is whether the hundreds of bills on agendas can get to the governor's desk like that year when just under 400 did.
