And now here is visualization of these changes in temperatures over land areas for the last 100 years. Heating up over the long-term and now record warm.

Last than one week until #ShowYourStripes day! Check out some of our tools from @climatecentral.org to design and share your own climate changes stories: trello.com/b/bpDKOhd5/s...

Monday ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the 3rd lowest on record (JAXA data) • about 190,000 km² below the 2010s mean • about 860,000 km² below the 2000s mean • about 1,380,000 km² below the 1990s mean • about 1,840,000 km² below the 1980s mean More: zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-i... ⚒️🧪

This is quite eye-opening to me anyways... temperatures averaged over land areas so far this year are statistically tied for the warmest on record! Data from www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/lan...

And now June #Arctic sea ice thickness by decade... Data information: climatedataguide.ucar.edu/climate-data...

lol oh my 😬

A global view of temperature anomalies over the last month (left), 3 months (center), and 12 months (right)... Data from @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social ERA5 reanalysis at doi.org/10.24381/cds...

The long-term area of #Arctic sea ice is declining in every month of the year. However, the largest losses of sea ice are observed during the late summer and early fall. I just added this graphic to my polar indicators page: zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-i.... Concentration means fraction of ice cover. 🧪

Last month's total #Arctic sea ice volume averaged the 2nd lowest on record for the month of May. This was about 38% below 1979 levels and 24% below the 1979-2024 May average. More at zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-i.... Data from PIOMAS. 🌊

What a hot mess. Climate change dashboard updated through last month: zacklabe.com/climate-chan...

Technical data update - I just went through and processed sea-ice concentration data from NOAA/NSIDC CDR *version 5*, which I will now use moving forward. I previously used v4 for my visualizations. Differences are negligible (e.g., minor improvements in coastal areas; doi.org/10.7265/rjzb...).

Alaska’s 1st ever Heat Advisory is in effect for Sunday. A Flood Watch for snowmelt is also in effect for northern AK 🌡️Last week: 15°-25°F below normal 🌡️This week: 10°-20°F above normal 🔴Climate Change is playing a role in this weather whiplash. Sunday's unusual heat: at least 2x to 4x more likely

Last month was the 2nd hottest May on record for our planet. It was also the 2nd warmest over the oceans as well as over just land areas. Data by NOAAGlobalTemp v6.0.0 (www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/lan...). See more in the @noaa.gov monthly summary: www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/monit....

My #Arctic sea-ice thickness and volume data visualizations were updated through May 2025: zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-i... #SciComm #DataViz #OpenScience #OpenData

Friday ice update - #Arctic sea ice extent is currently the 4th lowest on record (JAXA data) • about 180,000 km² below the 2010s mean • about 840,000 km² below the 2000s mean • about 1,350,000 km² below the 1990s mean • about 1,790,000 km² below the 1980s mean More: zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-i... ⚒️🧪

Evolution of May #Arctic sea ice and sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies during the satellite-era... A summary of last month can be found from the @nsidc.bsky.social at nsidc.org/sea-ice-toda... *SST data set (OISSTv2.1) is only available since about 1982

Such a loss for so many reasons. Archiving these sites is of course important and necessary. But our climate changes quickly, both from natural variability (like ENSO) and due to human causes. These resources then become outdated fast. Same goes for the increasing number of decommissioned datasets.

See why we call it Arctic "amplification" 🫣 Graphic available at zacklabe.com/arctic-tempe...

🔴Climate Shift Index Alert: France Exceptionally intense early summer heat continues through the weekend. 🌡️ Temps >35°C (95°F), 15°C above normal Climate change has made this heat: • At least 5x more likely for 16.3M • ≥3x more likely for 58M More: www.climatecentral.org/climate-shif...

There is a widespread positive trend for increasing precipitation across most of the #Arctic Ocean in June, which is largest near the North Pole and some coastal land regions. + Data: psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded... + Info: doi.org/10.25923/xf7...

Global mean sea surface temperature anomalies (departure from average) for every January to May period since the 1850s... Data from NOAA ERSSTv5 (psl.noaa.gov/data/gridded...).

#Arctic climate rankings are in for May 2025: zacklabe.com/archive-2025/. Low ice volume was the most notable statistic here. #OpenScience #OpenData #SciComm #DataViz

Yikes... I missed this. Looks like climate-related feeds including NASA Climate, NASA Ice, and NASA GISS all have notices that they are closing their Twitter accounts and consolidating.

This year's #ShowYourStripes day is coming up! Check out our resources at @climatecentral.org for creating your own climate change stories: www.climatecentral.org/stripes-info...

Last month was the 2nd hottest May on record globally (after just last year and with 2020 in 3rd). Some of the largest warm anomalies were in the Middle East, and it was notably cooler over India. Summary of the month at climate.copernicus.eu/surface-air-... with @copernicusecmwf.bsky.social data.
