Going low for waders Teresa Frost outlines the importance of the BTO's Low Tide Counts for accurately assessing populations of estuary birds, as illustrated by the results of this vitally important study which is now in its third decade:

Solway tidal bore moving gulls, Golden Plover and Barnacle Geese on Sunday 16th March - what an amazing natural spectacle! An otter followed it too, but didn't capture that on camera. #ukbirding

Our bearded sheepdog pre and post a visit to the Groomshed @samueleglington.bsky.social

Leapt out of bed with great excitement at 00:20 last night when I heard swans flying by! They were heading east & I managed to grab my phone to record. Thanks to @sconebirding.bsky.social for ID pic: they've 'fence staples' in the spectrogram that look to be a Bewick's thing. #nocmig #norfolkbirding

Scanning day! I collected data on 127 ewes on my clipboard this morning. #spreadsheetqueen #ukfarming #sheep

The Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) and Goose & Swan Monitoring Programme (GSMP) are now on Bluesky! 🦢 We'll be sharing our latest research findings, how to get involved & vacant survey sites. We’d love to know what you’ve seen on your surveys too, so tag us in your posts. 🦆 #Ornithology #UKBirding

Nice to set off for a wander at Wells this morning and immediately bump into two Whitefronts. #Norfolkbirding

Everyone who came in the office admired my copy, stunning!

Celebrated #WorldWetlandsDay with a walk with @samueleglington.bsky.social this evening along the restored River Nar at Castle Acre Common, a chalk stream reconnected to its floodplain. www.restorerivers.eu/wiki/index.p...

Be sure to tune into Countryfile on #WorldWetlandsDay (Sunday 2nd February) to learn about Whooper Swan monitoring in the UK 🦢 @wwtworldwide.bsky.social #UKBirding

Wetlands are vitally important for waterbirds. 🦢 Research involving BTO suggests that the management of protected areas in Europe can aid wintering #waterbirds species in shifting their ranges north as the climate warms. 🌍 Read more ➡️ bit.ly/ResearchWater... #WorldWetlandsDay #Ornithology

On World Wetlands Day, be sure to watch BBC Countryfile on Sunday 2nd at 18:05 on BBC One as we bring one of the UK's very best wetlands, WWT Welney, to the nation's television screens! See @lizziebruce.bsky.social counting swans & me chatting to Matt Baker about the increase in Whoopers!

“If Jennifer walked into a Ford showroom with a suitcase of cash and bought the absolute cheapest car on sale, with no frills or options, it would cost her a staggering *sixteen thousand pounds* more than a decade ago, twice as much money after inflation. Oh, and she’d be forced to buy an SUV.”

This sounds like someone is going to have fun

A Brief History of Music Today Is Just Noise 🧵

Meeting the new Shetland ewes

1775: Rabbits make incomparably the finest turf, for they not only bite closer than larger quadrupeds; but they allow no bents to rise: hence warrens produce much the most delicate turf for gardens. Sheep never touch the stalks of grasses.

Stunning noctilucent clouds tonight from Belmullet, Co. Mayo.

Our working Beardie had a day off farming as a WAH/birding dog today, with a potter about the forest at lunchtime before the rain. She seems to have enjoyed the rest after herding yesterday.

Halfway through lambing. We lamb outside. Spent the weekend sorting out and moving the ewes and lambs to another field, leaving the pregnant ones behind, so things are a bit more orderly now. I attempted to write all the numbers down, but as ever fieldwork isn't my strong suit. Many swallows!

I came here for the moss feed as per CEO interviews, so for my first post here is some moss from outside my front door. #mossmonday
