1. After a very manly bubble bath to cleanse my soul, I remembered a story. It's a true story, one about the difference between frugality, and being cheap, and why frugality is a good idea, cheapness is not. This happens in my home state of Louisiana, and I was told the story over thanksgiving meal

So many community groups are trying hard to rise to this moment and yet I'm seeing such impatience and to be frank rudeness from people. Folks are doing a lot with a little. When something doesn't go perfectly, it's OK to not lose it on folks. It really is.

The more I’ve dug into certain COVID conspiracy theories, the more I’ve realised that some of them are being inadvertently fuelled by perhaps well-meaning but flawed ideas about covid immunity in wider coverage. New post: kucharski.substack.com/p/a-zombie-s...

Arguably we are overdue for what is happening now. I think that's why so many communities of color are upset but not spiraling. White people are experiencing our reality. Trust the government? Why? The US government unified to oppress and not much else. Certainly not to progress

"Authoritarianism is not a grassroots movement. It’s not an uprising of the people. It’s a top-down, elite-driven power grab designed to strip us of our rights, concentrate wealth, and silence dissent." open.substack.com/pub/antiauth...

SCOOP: A US Treasury threat intelligence analysis has designated DOGE staff an ‘insider threat'. An internal email reviewed by WIRED calls DOGE staff's access to federal payments systems “the single biggest insider threat risk the Bureau of the Fiscal Service has ever faced.”

“A new analysis by independent automotive blog FuelArc suggests that fire fatalities are 17 times more likely in a Cybertruck than in the infamous Ford Pinto — the posterchild deadly cars if ever there was one.”

"Despite the declining or stable trends for most #COVID indicators, wastewater detections remain high, with a sharp rise in the Northeast, which is now seeing the nation’s highest level." via @cidrap.bsky.social www.cidrap.umn.edu/influenza-ge...

Humility is in order right now. No one knows what will make a difference. So do everything that you can to take some form of constructive action. 1000 people taking action is ALWAYS better than 1000 people doing nothing or 1000 people acting like East German figure skating judges.

This is a quote from my 2020 book HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT and from several of my articles. It was made into a protest sign, pictured below, by Indivisible St. Louis in 2019.

"'Red' and 'blue' states were manufactured to create monocultures out of a multifaceted nation in which most people belong to neither party." -- THEY KNEW (2022)

I know that all these institutions know how to push back because when Obama directed them to enforce pre-existing Title IX law, universities said no. They flat out refused until there was a working group and specific guidelines. And even then, they *still* refused.

We're watching the collapse of the litigation first [often times only] strategy that many liberal donors have favored for the past 50 years.

Performative public lying is a hallmark of far right authoritarian parties

i do not understand the ideological impetus for this policy (or the NIH research freeze). it’s not clientelism, his constituents are the main recipients. it’s a death maximization strategy. like he’s entered a contract with some dark god and must deliver them souls

The point of the firehose of Executive Orders is to disorient and to demobilize. It's to instill maximum fear. If we know this, then that's already half the battle. This means that we have to respond with focus on those most vulnerable & targets. It means we have to refuse their attempt to scare us.

Being a person with deadly, incurable cancer who is nonetheless still alive for an indefinite timeframe gives me an interesting metaphor that helps me deal with things like large-scale corruption in government or commerce. Bear with me for a second while I try to explain.
