The Wiley journal "ChemistrySelect" has retracted four papers by the embattled researcher Hitler Louis and his associates. Following J. Phys. Chem. B (ACS), Scientific Reports (Nature Portfolio), ACS Omega, and Mol. Syst. Des. Eng (RSC), it is the 5th journal to retract some of HL's output. (1/2)

Incidentally, the executive board of the German Mineralogical Society #DMG meets in Bad Honnef once a year (they meet there because they use a centre owned by the German Physical Society #DPG located in Bad Honnef). Maybe they should also arrange a field trip?

My new #preprint looks at the role of octahedral aluminium sites in #zeolites on adsorption of the anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil. #DFT shows that 5-FU strongly binds to those sites. The bonds do not break in the presence of water, reducing the amount of 5-FU available for #drugdelivery. #compchem

Not sure whether it counts as a hobby, but I do occasionally add observations on inconsistencies in papers on PubPeer. It mostly feels like screaming into the void, but sometimes it can help to correct the scientific record. Kudos to the other two anonymous commenters! pubpeer.com/publications...

I saw another paper using #DFT to study Be_12O_12 cages for the removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewaters appeared recently. Not convinced that it is desirable and/or practical to bring the wastewater in contact with nanosized beryllium oxide, but who am I to judge? www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Good move! One should note that the list is not complete because some German institutions left earlier. For example, my employer @unibremen.bsky.social is not on the list, but deactivated the account in autumn 2023.

Those who are somehow familiar with #H2storage may be surprised to see such storage capacities being claimed in a reputed ACS journal. I alerted the journal more than half a year ago of several things that did not add up in this paper (and another one from the same group). Nothing happened yet...

Merry Christmas and a happy and peaceful end of the year! I'm no good at baking, I have no cat, and my Christmas drinks are nondescript, but one thing I'm decent at is drawing #crystal structures. For the occasion, I prepared the zeolite mazzite (of course, a #zeolite!) in a seasonal attire! 🎄

Good advice 👍🏼 I have a resubmission deadline on Christmas Eve, but we asked for an extension for precisely that reason. The end of the year is already hectic enough and the manuscript will not benefit from a rushed revision.
