🚨 WEBINAR ALERT 🚨 Join KGI on March 25th for a live discussion on designing algorithmic feeds that put people first. As legislation and litigation around algorithms heats up, it’s never been more important to learn how they can be improved.

Gail Slater confirmed 78-19 to head antitrust at the Justice Department. She'll be sworn in tomorrow (Wednesday).

Our experiences online are shaped by algorithmic feeds used to determine what users see when scrolling their social media feeds and other online services. Documented harms include problematic overuse in teens, reduced user satisfaction, and polarization.

Super excited to have contributed to this exciting new report from @knightgtown.bsky.social on how to make algorithms better!

🚨 The first round of Digital Services Act (DSA) audits shows a major challenge: Without comparable definitions & methodologies, transparency & accountability are limited. KGI recently reviewed audits focused on recommender systems. bit.ly/3XmZGPc What did we find? 🧵👇

At least Timothee would’ve given a good acceptance speech 😴

I miss DEI

The FTC is launching a public comment period on censorship by tech platforms. The request for information solicits comments from users who have been “banned, shadow banned, demonetized, or otherwise censored.” 1/ www.ftc.gov/news-events/...

At this point, the GOP is barely a step away from outright admitting they just want everyone to die.

We should expect to see confrontations bt tech companies &the EU on the DSA very soon. This is one of the main (business) reasons Zuck started glazing Trump, paid that $25 million settlement (bribe), etc. Note Vance referenced content moderation in his speeches. Europe is their 2nd largest market…

you there!! tune into this sick new tech conference

Has anyone spoken out?? WHERE are the forceful condemnations? Aren't universities supposed to be devoted to freedom of inquiry? and research? This cannot all be left to the courts

Who needs floofball when u, a floof, has couch and shoe

Policy isn’t about getting people to do the right thing for the right reasons; it’s about getting them to do the right thing for THEIR reasons. We can walk and chew gum, people.

I suspect this action virtually promises substantial political violence in the near future. It is an egregious affront to democracy.

Whistleblowing is a similar paradox. You’re literally begging people to investigate themselves for months as you struggle with HR and then if you come forward, it’s anyone’s guess how they will try to ruin you.

So Trump launched a meme coin on Friday night, just days before becoming President, and entities he controls retain 80% of the coin. And the coin passed a $9 billion market cap in just hours. I just can't...

shawshank redemption really is the best movie of all time

Note that this is an independent developer building this. But that's very cool. This is what an open network enables.

We need a federal data privacy law now. Or we’ll continue down the road of a piecemeal strategy of banning popular foreign apps, while the US data broker industry continues to monetize the data of all Americans, mostly without our consent or notice. #AIBillofRights

I see OpenAI also put out something about AI policy today, but it looks like they left out one of the most important pieces? See image. More on that in my just-posted/just-skeeted co-authored TPP piece: www.techpolicy.press/a-call-for-m... and a few pieces from the DTI blog: dtinit.org/blog/tags#AI

A quick hit on my thoughts about the Meta decision around US based content moderation -- each of which is basically getting fleshed out into longer op-eds and posts to come soon. But to get you started on some takeaways from Zuck's announcement here's a 🧵 1/

@knightgtown.bsky.social & Georgetown’s CCT Program are hiring a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to lead research to understand how evidence and research is being used in social media and platform litigation. Applications open until Jan 15. Apply here: kgi.georgetown.edu/fritz-postdo...

On Net Neutrality: When Congress passed the Telecommunications Act in 1934 it clearly wanted the American people to enjoy non-discriminatory, low-cost communications services. Finding otherwise is blatant judicial activism that puts corporate interests over American democracy.

Saying the consumer welfare standard protects workers is similar to saying you have health insurance but your deductible is $500,000. So, while theoretically possible, it almost never provides protection in practice.

alert: jackbox games is a new years family hit

This is an excellent idea. Gonna give it a try

What a flex

happy holidays from zander and the sibling

hey we should defang what's left of regulatory oversight and staff all key public safety and consumer protection agencies with corrupt incompetents

The fact that this is taken seriously goes show how much power “national security” has over policy making in Washington
