Language didn't arise out of nowhere. What Trump and Vance are doing is hanging a bullseye on people, and despite their claims to the contrary, the poorest and most vulnerable are at the very center of their target.

While no longer religious but having grown up Catholic, the church I remember granted sanctuary to migrants and stressed the importance of helping the poor. You worked your way into heaven through good deeds.

I'm no Catholic theologian, but Vance's supposed priority of obligations sounds a long way from the Gospel message. (For starters, Jesus told his disciples to abandon their parents etc. to follow him.) Love God; love neighbor, even the stranger, the least, the marginalized.
