Yesterday at Communion, we sang sang Rock of Ages—a hymn which I mostly associate w/ lowchurch Protestants—and I realized it's about the Side Wound of Christ! Those little old Baptist grannies from my childhood would be scandalized to know their fav. hymn is basically just medieval Catholic piety! 🕯️

From his wounded side which flowed
Be of sin the doube cure
Wash me Savior
Make me pure.
It's right there!
"How blest are they who still abide
close sheltered in thy bleeding side,
who life and strength from thence derive,
and by thee move, and in thee live."
(English trans., J. Wesley, 1740.)
