Strategic voting makes Canada look a lot more polarized than it is, but polarization can be a self-fulfilling prophecy, and we can't let it get too much of a toe-hold here.

As someone who spent most of my life in Alberta, I'd say western Cons are already pretty darn polarized, which pushes the rest of us away. I don't know how we get past that.
Ranked ballots is another alternative to strategic voting. If I really like the NDP better, but would prefer the Liberals to the NDP, I can indicate that on the ballot. In some ways it is like another form of strategic voting; in others not, because I can show my true preference.
