I don't think they've forgotten what fun feels like, but it does seem like fun is a mere side effect and not the priority at times. I think the number one priority when it comes to AAA games is "engagement" which translates to getting as much of the player's time as possible, whatever it takes.
We just grew up. Plenty of fun, we just aren't gleeful little children anymore... we have other needs, we have duties, we have tasks to finish, we have grown somber and jaded with time.
Can't expect them to make games for some dude with Midlife-Crisis...
Imagine saying "the world just makes you jaded" and expecting everyone to just nod and agree as if it's some universal truth, and not just a sign you need to get over your bitter self and go to therapy
This. And then other people say "Growing up is a myth" - its a myth to them cuz they happen to have so many things happen w/o problem in their life and or have that much money to not worry about basic needs.
Look to independent studios for some of the most fun games. They might not have the flashiest graphics and they probably can't afford licensing the hottest IP, but they are usually more of a passion project for the developers.
Agree with this - video games are frozen in the 2007 era. Nothing much has happened that has improved or changed the genre since. Very little makes me excited to play. Needs new ideas and people brave enough to fund them or we are doomed to rinse and repeat blockbusters like COD.
Define “makers”. The developers 99% just want to make fun shit. Blame project managers and the execs in the publishing company forcing them to cut corners and shove in gross monetization for the sake of ROI
It's because of Publishers, rich fatty's whom never played a video game in their life, don't care about art, only care about money and wealth.
Secondary, developers who grew up with the kind of idea of "self-actualization through wealth" or some shit, lifestyles of the rich & famous, all that jazz.
Imagine if we stop chasing graphical trends and hundreds of gigabyte of harddrive space but instead focus on vertex coloring and maximize the game. Imagine what we could do.
Because publishers are obsessed with objective measurable things like ‘hyper realistic graphics’, rather than (as Rory Sutherland might say) the oblique things that gamers actually care about like story, gameplay and tone/theme because they are harder to quantify to stockholders and boards.
Triple A titles are like that because they focus more on appearance than substance. But there have been a few that are fun, like Horizon Forbidden West. And I do like this new Indiana Jones game.
But I don't bother with Call of Duty and others anymore.
Video games when it was a collection of wizards who were the only people on the planet who knew how to make them, were mostly designed with "fun" at the core. As soon as EVERYONE coukd make videogames "Profit" became the main focus.
The Makers are really not cooking lately.... I wonder if They are okay... We should check up on The Makers. Who wants to help me and gather a team. We can go and look together.
I remember back in the 80s computer games were not necessarily "fun". It took a while for people to realize that game programmers were only great at making the software, but it finally took players of the game to show the programmers how to make the games fun to play.
Indi games are still great, but triple A certainly has. Though I think the problem is management focusing on money and not letting the creative people do their job.
I'm having a blast with my son playing the new prince of Persia game. Agree when it comes to AA and AAA games though. I found GoW Ragnarok a bit of a slog to get through in the end. Last game I finished.
I played both ToTK and BG3 last year, and Hi-Fi Rush was still my GOTY. Large, open world games just get bogged down in systems and quests and areas to explore and feel like a chore to play.
i would've liked ToTK a lot more without my BoTW fatigue, and i really WANTED to get into BG3, but it all ended up feeling like cleaning my room. starting in one corner and trying to pick everything up on the way to the other corner, inevitably missing a bunch of things anyway
Oh, so because you played it and didn't like it, it must be shit. Nevermind hundreds, thousands, millions of other people like it, they're invalid. You, and only your feelings matter. Doesn't matter if anyone else likes anything; if you don't like it, it's trash.
You turn my words around dude. I said I found it boring, i didnt dispute that fir many people its an engaging game , so if you want i am the problem.
But you could be a bit less hostile here in bsky.
Also: Oh indie games exist? Holy jumping fucking Jesus I had no idea indie games existed when I was referring to them, thank you like 20 different people.

Meanwhile most gamers just want games that are fun. Some challenge sure, but mostly to feel fun to tackle.
Management has.
I honestly tried Skyrim. Looks great of course with GPU etc.
But it bored me to death, really tried.
The problem is you.
