A great day for a system of affordable, national public transportation after being told NO! for a century and reassured that private business will save the day.
It’s beautiful up here! We moved to Petoskey a year and a half ago and just love it! Hope you and @chastenbuttigieg.bsky.social are well, it’s been far too long hope to see you guys again soon!
Not so good if you've suffering post-acute sequelae from a virus that everybody either pretends is over, or is "just a flu or cold, 🙄" and don't have a fraction of the energy you used to.
Oh G*d “Get skinnier tires, fat tires. Are those tubeless? Why use shocks on a trail? Steel’s to heavy. Carbon shatters. How do you carry the twins? No, not like THAT! Trump tariffs are killing the bike industry. DO SOMETHING! Why aren’t you clip-less? Why are you clip-less? Are those disc brakes?”
It would be a better day if America stopped talking, posting, talking and more talking and more posting and really did something useful to stem the tide of this tsunami of evil and corruption that has befallen on your nation.
Up North means the Northern portion of the lower peninsula of Michigan, starting from roughly Cadillac/Grayling going up to the bridge. Yoopers are an entire different breed.
Thanks. I love this bike so much and the color. Kona sutra gravel bike. I have a disability so o can’t ride it as often as I’d like, but when I can it brings me so much joy. I used to race bikes, but this is still one of my all time favs. And an America made bike.
I used to have a forest green Kona, but had to sell it. I still miss it. They’re the greatest bikes, I swear. I’m so glad you’re getting joy out of it when you can!!
I haven’t been up, up north to Mackinac in about 34-ish years, but even back then I appreciated how beautiful Northern Michigan is. And on the island, it’s like stepping through a time portal.
What is your definition of up north Michigan? Because I’m a Yooper. Are you one of those guys who thinks up north means Houghton Lake? Say it ain’t so…(Also, I hope you had a good ride.)
I remember hearing an ad on a radio station down there calling Higgins/Houghton Lake area “The Great White North”. The U.P. isn’t even the great white north. That’s Canada!
You are doing exactly what America needs right now...speaking rationally to all people to show that we are more alike than different. I love the guy who made the statement about hearing someone speak in complete sentences. Me, too. You sound presidential. #PresidentPete
Pete and his husband live in Traverse City and I am pretty sure this picture is from the TART trails. Highly recommend visiting https://traversetrails.org/
Interested in being a champion for #BikeEd in school, #BalanceBikes, #TrafficGardens, and #BikeBus #BiciBus efforts, to support kids learning how to bike, and later experience independent mobility? We need more people comfortable getting out on bikes for a bike ride. #Social #Community #WellBeing
Ok. You have fully adapted to Northern Michigan. We like Canada so much we have their vernacular! "Eh? Beauty,eh?Hey, you hoser!" (Kudo's to Strange Brew.)
Pete-honest question. Do you believe in universal healthcare, & other policies that would actually lift the working class up? I feel for us to overcome this fascist regime we cannot do the status quo & being too centered will get us nowhere we need a big bold agenda & go balls to the wall with /1
I would happily give every 14 year old an e-bike with no "training". They're light, speed limited, small, and much less prone to distraction and showing off. It's orders of magnitude safer than driving.
They don't understand the necessity to "yield", "always ride on the right and pass on the left", "don't surprise people and pets from behind", and various other necessary skills
And when they get on actual roads, they dont follow any rules, causing drivers to not be able to predict their actions
I hit 15 mph going downhill for sure. However, I think a 10mph speed limit is appropriate given the number of pedestrians on these trails who pay little to no attention to their surroundings
True. Multi use trails require common sense by cyclists using them. When trails are empty, I frequently speed up. When pedestrians; especially small children are ahead I slow way down. Trails are not raceways. Injuring someone unnecessarily is inexcusable.
15 mph is what my bike/body “wants” to do if that makes sense- 10mph requires an odd cadence for me that’s harder to maintain- especially for long stretches. Not trying to argue- just giving you the “average” cyclist perspective.
I'm a casual biker and casually maintain 13-15mph with stuff on my bike, around 15-16mph if I'm not carrying much. The point was also not about sustained speed. But most casual riders can sustain at least like 12mph.
I'd say maintained speed for a casual biker on a light enough bike is 12-15MPH. Definitely slower on an encumbered bike or something as heavy as a Citi/Divvy bike but that's an exception.
As a slow causual cyclist myself, if I don’t have a headwind I’m going to be comfortable cruising between 15 and 18mph on the flat, depending on which bike I’m on.
Ebikes and scooter riders are a menace on MUPs. They don’t slow down *ever* and ride like they’re on the road competing with cars. Ebikes need to be regulated like the motorized vehicles they are because most of their riders don’t know what “responsibly” means.
I ride to and from work along several miles of shared path with lots of pedestrians and ebikers.
They coexist just fine.
An ebiker whose handlebar barely bruises a pedestrian can get sent flying 20 feet. Fear of injury is a more powerful incentive for being careful than any law.
You threw your entire argument out of the window with the “you are stupid” line. But also, by only citing fatalities you’re ignoring injuries. So yes cyclists, even maniacs riding ebikes at 20mph on pedestrian trails, can’t kill anyone, they definitely can injure someone.
Pete - if you have time drive over to east of Grayling. Fly fish the Au Sable River for trout then check the Jack Pine forests for the formally endangered kirtland’s warbler
As a Dane (Copenhagener) I so agree 🚴♀️
We commute on bikes. The urban layouts are bike and pedestrian friendly.

It hasn't. Now do it OUR way.
Next time please get some triceratops in there or something.

I think he underestimates how beloved you actually are...that might be the Red Line he crossed.
Also, bike trails are the best. 🙌
Especially if YOU'RE running for POTUS 😁

Mostly, I was asking the temp bc it’s the same as mine
Is this like sticking a Canadian flag on your backpack to pretend you are Canadian? Mind you...you can move here. We will let you in.

The coup must end!

My lilac’s are just beginning to bloom💜 Enjoy your ride Pete.
Have a nice ride though!

Even a slow, casual cyclist is going to hit 15.
But too many of us think giving 14yo's a motorized bike without any training is a good idea
So speed limits are here to stay
And when they get on actual roads, they dont follow any rules, causing drivers to not be able to predict their actions
Sparing peds is always a good thing though.
2. I don't see any pedestrians at all in the 1/4 mile or so of visible trail in that photo
3. Limit of 15mph doesn't mean you have to go 15 when it's crowded.
I don't think anyone is going to get a speeding ticket on a vehicle with no speedometer and no requirement for licensing or registration anyway.
I didn't say it. I just said that the biker they are describing doesn't cruise at 15.
Bikes aren't cars. They can brake in less distance because they weigh less. They can dodge a crash easier because they're 1/4 the width.
And cyclists are motivated to be careful by the fear of hurting themselves.
They coexist just fine.

You are stupid.
(Class I ebikes are 20mph)
Lots of videos online of non-electric cyclists getting ticketed on these speed limited mixed use paths.

But hey, get on your bikes and ride :)
