Murder in Mississippi is very out of the mold for him, but seeing it made me think about him differently and get more out of his work. It bugs me that people think of him as schlocky Americana.

I visited the museum in July, and it was a surprisingly emotional experience. Rockwell seemed to believe in an innate goodness in Americans. I just wish we could all live up to it.

Rockwell's casting, staging, acting and use of props is where the magic of his art lies for me. Bear in mind, all the happy, sentimental images he painted for periodicals was his salve for a country dealing with war, depression, racism and more.

I see his influence in many artists today, and certainly his spirit continues in painters like @jamesgurneyart.bsky.social, @scott-gustafson.bsky.social and @kadirnelson.bsky.social . We need art like Rockwell's now more than ever.🎨
