I read it as a rather thoughtful take on the role AI currently plays in @wikipedia.org and the roles it can and will play in the future. It’s easy to “take stand”, harder to provide the tools to make taking a stand possible.

They also state that they’re only going to build open source AI. But they can’t afford to. So they’ll use a commercial service. Even though those aren’t open-source. (Maybe one day they magically will be?) So donation $$$ will be going to a company like DeepSeek or (soon) OpenAI. Great.

A much better stance would be recognising the existential threat AI poses to Wikipedia and making the site a bastion of human-created content.
