As far back as elementary school, there were kids who would come back on a Tuesday and argue with the teacher about what was taught on Monday, and when they did so, you could hear their parents’ voices— and edge of menace— come out out of those little mouths.

I agree with you. It was greed by the rich that started this.

I remember well in the 1970’s as they were offshoring jobs. The corporations said that they could produce the same goods cheaper (and they did get cheap mostly in quality), while Americans could work white collar jobs.

The decline in US manufacturing started in the 1950s. After WWII, European and Japanese economies started growing again and Americans moved toward managerial and white collar jobs. Anyone who blames NAFTA doesn't know what they're talking about.

People in Chicago could name the fire, but I bet most are unaware of the Peshtigo fire, which killed far more people. The country was a dirty, dangerous place in the 19th century even apart from westward migration.

NAFTA wasn't the issue it was automation and competition. 9 out of every 10 factory jobs that has been lost has been lost to a robot. American companies fell far behind their competition from other countries. Failing to innovate and evolve. Basically the owner class children of magnates shit the bed

Global free trade absolutely was the origin, NAFTA accelerated what was left of it. I remember factory after factory closing down in my town while growing up in the 90s.

You can nitpick the timeline but this is the story of the Rust Belt.

(But they sure as hell blamed “Mexicans.”)
