OK, this is my favorite poem since I first read it in 11th grade English, and I love it so much that it was literally my first tattoo at the age of 42!! 😂
Actually when I gave it to my students, most of them imagined it was a brother eating his little sibling's plums. They took the "they were delicious" line to be gloating
but then obviously feeling bad and leaving an apology note. But a half-assed apology. It's so funny how people project their own experiences onto this poem
Someone wrote a parody on Twitter during the height of the pandemic along the lines of "I have purchased the avocados which you fondled with your 'rona hands" and I think of it daily
Gail Carson Levine wrote a book called “This Is Just To Say” which were all false apology poems based on fairy tales. It might be young for your HS but there were a few that might be fun for the end of your lessons/ unit.

(Also: love being grouped into this trio of dudes!)
I’m always fascinated at how furious I am after I read it and every man I’ve ever talked about it with says it’s a poem of praise! AHHHH! 😂
