But that loss of trust hasn’t led to better systems. It’s left a vacuum. And into that vacuum rushed platforms, influencers, and algorithmic dynamics that simulate V, D, and A, but don’t deliver them.

We haven’t built a healthier democratic infrastructure. We’ve built a fast-moving spectacle where truth is optional, dialogue is gamified, and power is rarely held to account. It feels participatory, but rarely changes anything that matters.
And the danger is this: without real Verification, Deliberation, or Accountability, democracies lose not just legitimacy, but direction. Public life becomes noise. Manipulation thrives. Cynicism sets in. And those who seek control no longer need consent, they only need confusion.
Also, without a clear distinction between fact and fiction there is no shared reality. And surely without a shared reality, there is no shared humanity.
I don't think we've grasped the repercussions of this yet but it's becoming clearer by the day.
And also, this confusion leads to thoughtful people retreating in a way because they are filled with doubts and too busy trying to process and analyse. In this new confusing landscape nuance leads to a form of paralysis which leaves the field wide open to the shouters and the binary mob.
The core problem is that Right Wing aithoritarians own/control almost all media, including mainstream, & most soc media. Their bias & soc media algorithms reflect that.

Everything we are experiencing is by design.It has never been possible to have accountability with a wealth hoarding class that believes they are above all reproach to violate any and all laws and cheat the working class.

It is much simpler than that. Democracy, i.e. the power of the people, was supposed to be based on equality of rights, opportunities and responsibility before the law. >>>
With a few brief exceptions in ancient times (Ancient Greece, and two or three other cases), this never really happened anywhere. And now it, i.e. democracy, does not exist anywhere.
I blame Rupert Murdoch and greedy/ambitious conservatives pols on both sides of the Atlantic for this over decades. That's why proposed EU and UK regulation of Social Media is so important: restoring a decency to public life.
