In my current work, I point to the invasion of Iraq 2003 as a moment where the public's trust in the foundational ideals of democracy, verification, deliberation, and accountability were systematically betrayed, destroying their trust in democratic systems.

What’s not talk about enough is the missteps the GWB admin made when it came to the Iraqi military & police and then we spent a ton of capital attempting to rebuild both.
There were no serious congressional hearings or any company held accountable
It was a concerted campaign of deceit to do global war, which corp establishment Democrats and Republicans were too happy to exploit.

Iraq in 2003 was a full blonde lie and did not have a broad coalition suporting it.
Republicans stuck to Fox News after (some of) the rest of the media started reporting on the war as it existed in reality. The seeds of future “fake news” attacks were sown.

Is it simply that no one was actually held accountable?

And there are parallels between declining public confidence in the American government and the decline in confidence among foreign governments in our own.
Combine that with the collapse of the economic system in 2008 and multiple major pillars of democracy are undermined in one election cycle.
Iraq knocked that on the head for good.
