The broader problem, of course, is that Denyer has already made up her mind about this. The so-called research she's supposedly seen is just creative back-thinking to justify a wholly emotive, ideological decision already taken. She will be blind to any other research that doesn't suit that stance.

Surely the journalist should ask "cite the paper, so I can quote the research"? And if none is given, say so in the article. Otherwise it is hearsay.

Journalism is about listing what are facts and what is hearsay.
