I was the oldest of a group of neighborhood kids who looooooooved this book, and had to have it read aloud quite often. Grover is such a relatable monster 😂
I read it to my kids using a silly, Grover adjacent voice. One of them, in their 30s, was reminiscing about it just 2 days ago. Keeping a copy for my grands. 💞
I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 I still have my first copy somewhere (1971!), missing a part of the cover after many later readings to nieces and nephews, all of whom are adults with their own families now
My friend had that book and I remember that I stopped turning the page because Grover was pleading me to stop. I didn't learn the ending for about 6 years.
This book used to terrify my son. He's 22 now and he told me he was writing a paper for one of his college classes about how this book is a masterclass in suspense.
I still read this to my kids, who are turning ten. My son recently told me, “Your Grover impression is so good!” And my eyes welled up!! Like, that is the validation I’ve been waiting for!
I LOVE this book! It was so rare that books broke the 4th wall back when I was a kid, and I absolutely loved being able to interact with Grover (my favorite Muppet).
I read this when I was 2 or 3. And honestly, this reaction STILL makes me laugh. Grover just absolutely flips out at the idea that you'd do what you normally do when you're reading a book..
When I was very young, my baby sister had to go in the hospital, and I would read her this book, exaggerating the text, pretending I couldn't turn the page. She loved it! I have the book now, and found another for my sister years later. I LOVE this book!
This is my absolute favourite book from childhood. The book is now in my daughters bookcase-torn pages taped and the odd stain ❤️🩹. When I read the words, I can hear my Dad’s voice imitating Grover. A hand me down from my cousin-her name is written in blue ink on first page (some letters backwards 😉).
This was my favorite book as a child, and I would require my father to read it to me every night sometimes more than once. But I would never let him read the last page. I hated for Grover to be embarrassed.
My daughter loved this book. We always made the sounds together and laughed so much doing it. Thank you for this precious memory. It makes my ❤️ smile.
This was my favourite book as a child. I thought it was so very hilarious and clever. My family never understood the appeal, but I still appreciate it even as an adult.
I read this to each of my sons (now 15 and 9.) It captured their imaginations so much that they each reenacted the movement of the pictures. I loved doing Grover’s voice.
I loved this book when I was little. I still do. I've been collecting children's books for about 20 years. Most for the illustrations (especially the lithos), but many for the memories/stories. This is one of them. I can hear my little self laughing at it right now!
Oh my god I LOVED this book! Thank you for reminding me. Got it for my kids when they were very little and couldn't give it up even when they were all in high school. Finally did give it away at a garage sale to someone who came with a trail of little kids. But man oh man it is brilliant!
The first book I read out loud myself and one that I read to my children each when they were learning. There’s such a good part for the parent to play at then end growing in exasperation that makes this a favorite!
I did nothing wrong. Didn’t mention my site. Was responding to your reply and giving you a suggestion to your problem. You can make whatever assumptions or conclusions that you want. Read the reply. It doesn’t mention my site
I had forgotten about this book, and it's a shame I did! This was right in line with Shel Silverstein for nightly reading when I was a kid (early 80's)
My kids loved this book. They are adults now, but we were recently talking about the books they loved as kids. This was one of the first they mentioned
I remember my mom reading me this book. Then I got one of the greatest joys of my life reading it to my kids, now in there 20s. I'm looking forward to the day I can read it to my grand kids. Grover is the best.
One of the great works of American literature. Join lovable, furry old Grover on his heroic journey as he teaches children about the wonders of existential dread.
I loved reading this book to my kids when they were young.
I especially liked emphasizing, 'you turned the page'.
This memory brought a smile to my face.

😍🤩😍🤩
Still do!
It was a loooong time before I turned the last page. I would read and re-read the rest over and over. 😅
strong?
It was my absolute favorite!
I loved it when she read it to my little sister.
And I loved reading it to my own son.
This book is a classic.
My granddaughter loved Grandpa's voices when I read it to her. I have so many of my fondest memories bound up with Grover in that one little book.
Grover should be taught alongside Donald Barthelme
Ah, great memories.
Nowadays it seems more like "The Horrors That Await You If You Get Out of Bed."
I especially liked emphasizing, 'you turned the page'.
This memory brought a smile to my face.
