Live action remakes are, aside from a pointless cash grab, a revival of the disrespect for animation as a medium, where people consider it inferior, or exclusively for children. It's like people think the only reason you'd animate anything is you can't afford sets, props and costumes.

Neverending story was already adapted (loosely) to an animated series in the early 90s.

I remember coming from the movies as a kid I really didn't like the show (or the third movie) but it might be worth looking into.

Imagine pitching a movie like "OK, it's the same movie everyone liked, but remove some of the plot and characters people liked, make some worse, and have a greater chance of special effect failures," and NOT getting laughed out of the meeting room.

It’s a shame that every single one of these live action adaptations of animated movies have the exact same approach: cobble something that is “passable” (actual reception may vary but is inconsequential to them) so they can continue using the IP.

The only movie that was warranting a remake was Willy Wonka with that Wonka movie, which even then, that was a prequel. (It's actually pretty good, though I haven't finished it yet)

It was directed by the man who directed the entire animated trilogy. He also directed Lilo and Stitch. He complained that Lilo and Stitch doesn't need a remake.

Chris Saunders is the director of the original. He was the heart and soul of that movie. DuBlois directed the other two, but they weren't as good. The live-action is a money grab.
