I DO feel ok making requests based on unarguable facts—“That stick is hitting him, would you please give him a little more space?” that no parent would be able to take issue with

I do think it’s reasonable to worry that parents will lose their shit at you - and I also try to tailor my messaging to be calm and factual. But I do try to at least use my words versus leaving, passive aggression, hinting, etc. it’s a balance. Parents need to meet other parents halfway!

Yes, and I do also tell my kids to expect that if they do stuff that impacts other people, they should expect them to have opinions about it. And sometimes I’ve had to get involved if a parent was correcting my kid in a way that wasn’t appropriate—we just have to be prepared to balance all of it

Oh for sure - I think we need to talk TO each other instead of around each other. I may not agree that my kids are being bothersome, but I’d rather have that information. And I’d much rather have someone just talk to ME than try to make public spaces adults only or (worse) call the cops etc.

Losing the ability to just SPEAK to each other is truly eroding our ability to coexist and making communities rules based, over-managed, and weirdly less safe imo.
