Love Coppola's Dracula but increasingly think it's one of the rare 2hr movies that would benefit from being 3hr's or longer

I was both in love with and disappointed by Coppola's Dracula: I thought Oldman was fantastic, Ryder and the suitors well-cast, but like you, the story felt rushed and too compacted. I also loathed Keanu in it, and felt he almost undermined the whole film. I intensely disliked him afterwards.

And have only fairly recently softened on him.

Branagh's Frankenstein was also highly anticipated by me: I'm a huge fan of the story (obviously), and De Niro is my favorite actor. However, I was left deeply disappointed, and I lay all of the blame on Branagh and his storied rampant ego at the time.

These were 2 of the 5 "prestige" horrors of the 90s, along with Mike Nichols' Wolf, Neil Jordan's Interview with the Vampire, and Stephen Frears' Mary Reilly. I found all of them flawed to differing degrees.

I didn't see this when it came out but I still remember the glee some of the critics seemed to take in giving 'golden boy' Branagh a kicking

There are a lot of scenes that open with a close up on Branagh the actor which I'd bet wouldn't happen if not for Branagh the director

I love it enough to forgive it it's weird, weird flaws. I just think Keanu was in a no win situation, on the one hand do you accept that you'll never be right for that part, or on the other do you turn down what's likely to be your only chance to work with Coppola?
