To be fair, in the second case, the deal was done in state court. Not fed court. The federal case was settled for 90 life sentences. The state case was screwed up by 2 consecutive DAs, the last being a Republican. So closure beat restitution with the consent of the victims' families.

I meant to write "closure beat retribution". Not restitution. Regardless, the kid had mental health issues, the prior DAs were admonished for engaging in misconduct, and they were looking at least another 2 years to get to trial and possibly another 20 for appeals. They did the right thing.

Let me get this straight—murder is murder. It’s wrong in both cases. Yet one gets death for a single murder, while the other gets a plea deal for over 20? Is the difference that one killed a rich man while the other killed middle-class people? When justice comes, it will be blind. It will be swift.
It may be possible the push for the death penalty is a bluff to scare Luigi into a plea deal to ensure he gets a life sentence without having to go to court. What makes this probable is that it would be a challenge to get an impartial jury and present actual evidence to prove him guilty.
Attacking, stealing or even humiliating the rich gets one the max penalty. Killing two dozen ordinary people ... meh. This is what oligarchy looks like.

The priorities of the US “justice” system are very clear. The system exists to protect capitalism and the systems that uphold it, like white supremacy. The past changes that have taken place to limit white supremacy and slightly curtail capitalism’s excesses have come at great cost and effort.

They'll never be able to undo the trial, no matter what they do to Luigi (or to his lawyer.) They won't be able to stop the words used in defense of Luigi- including some numbers/info we don't yet have access to- from ending up on public record. The health insurance murder scheme will be on trial.
