On reflection, I have seen a lot of (American) films that talk about Russia, but Russian films? I remember seeing 2 of them, that's all. When "the storks pass" that I had loved a lot and a Tarkovsky (which one?) where I was very bored.

I only watched it relatively recently, but it was amazing. I found a bunch of old Soviet films on Prime a few years ago. That plus the Mosfilm YouTube channel and Klassiki have dominated my viewing. Need to see more recent films!

Nowt wrong with silent!! I find it tricky because often, what you think of as Russian cinema, is actually Georgian, Armenian, Ukrainian etc My rule was, if it’s Russian language/Russian release, it gets in (but I have probably still made mistakes 🤣😬). Great to see Tarkovsky and Vertov love!

Ah! I ruled out the Ukrainian trilogy by Dovzhenko, but to be honest I don’t think I’d be comfortable counting Ukrainian cinema as Russian right now (plus they’re silent and I don’t know what language the original intertitles were).

I think Kira Muratova was Ukrainian but her films were in Russia and they we’re commentaries on the USSR more broadly. Still, I understand why it’s dicey! I cut Dovzhenko due the same reason as you. Parajanov too (largely Armenian/Ukrainian, I think?).

I have indeed! I enjoyed it (and own it) but I get that German’s filmmaking (although he died before it was finished, I think?) isn’t for everyone. ❤️🤷‍♂️
