And scans of film are effectively edited as are digital files by the cameras conversion software so....

I used to be in the "no editing brigade" until I did my dissertation and discovered in my research that the Royal Photographic society had debated darkroom retouching from the beginning.
Now I think what matters is what we get out of photography and if we succeed in achieving results we like.

Yeah, having used minilabs for 20years when I started photography I never got in the habit of editing. But the goal then was realistic. Now it's my creation, sometimes that means alternative techniques, custom jpg profiles, or sometimes post processing.

At choosing a subject, at pressing the trigger, at curation, at scanning, at printing, at framing, cropping...?

It is all selection. It is all editing. That's what art is.
