I used to be a fiend and play just about every MMO that came out. There's something wonderful about watching a game in that state and the community form.
I've never been able to get into MMO's myself, probably has to do with not having an established playgroup... Happy people find joy in them though! That's the important part!
I could never get into them because large crowds nervous (Autism thing) but I can only believe that you love them so much because you talk about and make content for them so often and that's awesome ❤
my favourite thing about them is when all of the ones i keep tabs on release updates in the same 2 week period and utterly destroy my attention span for the next month
I treat GW2 the same way i treat XIV: a narrative driven story that happens to have other players.
Imo the best way to really get into it is to play through the story content. The first 2 xpacs and their living story chapters go fucking *hard* and are well worth the cost
if you *do* like it, i would recommend the complete edition of the elder dragon saga. Its pricey but it gives you all of the content for the game's first major story arc (about a decades worth) and took me weeks to fully play through
Yeah, in the beginning they really revolutionized how everyone could play together. They broke is out of needing a LAN party in order to play with other people by opening the entire web to gaming. You could live in the US and play in a raid with people living from the UK, India, and China at once
Love it how a simple statement becomes one of: "me too", "I hate MMOs/MMOs nowadays", "I hate the MMO YOU like", and "which one are you going to shill for next?".
The monetization used to be so good. No sub fee, buy the expansion/content you actually want and it’s yours forever, and if you want just access to everything period, WoW sub.
Now it’s played like a stock market via crowns to gold and there’s an in-universe racist caricature selling loot crates.
MMOs used to be cool
I find that games playable offline and single player but with the option to play online multiplayer are much better.
Borderlands and Space Marine 2 come to mind
I used to play FFXIV, though I've moved on to playing Genshin as I feel it respects my time more. I can't afford a sub fee anyway with such slow content drops.
I love MMOs, and currently I'm waiting for Soul's Remnant to release
Used to play a lot of FTP MMOs, until I got to FFXIV and going sub was a time and a half 83 I've gotten to dress up my blorbos in so many different outfits, participate in fun little events and hang out with some nice peeps!

Wait I have to play them?!
Fallout 76, and Helldivers 2.
Specially alone somehow 🗿
Is very cool
Money
Only problems
Unsolved raids, etc.
The only one I truly loved was Ragnarok Online haha. I still have to see a Dungeon Crawler-esque MMORPG that achieves the same thing.
🍠✨
I hear they're on version three, with an old school version for the nostaliga nerds
... And it's not bc I'm a furry... I swear!! 👀

For now, stick with the living story chapter 1 and see if you enjoy it. Its a really great intro to the team you work with for most the story
Ah... the internet 🤦

I just never could mesh with the gameplay of any of them. :(
