Sadly, our colleague and friend Scott Hawley passed away this morning. He was an irreplaceable presence and force for good in the meiosis an Drosophila communities and will be sorely missed.

Honored to have had Scott and a mentor and colleague for more than 30 years. He will be missed greatly. Last week I asked how he’d feel about us following up on Hawley 1980, his PhD research. He said in typical Scott form, he’d feel incredibly honored and gracious. Glad I was able to tell him that.
You know, this isn't someone I'd ever heard of as a non-scientist, but somehow, every scientist I do know is expressing so much public grief over this loss. Now I wish I had met this extraordinary person.
This makes me very sad. When I was an undergraduate, he was my Genetics TA. He was bright, funny and informative. I remember very few of my TAs, but Scott was special.
Really sad news, his writings were truly inspiring to me in grad school and I was fascinated by his use of genetics to probe the mechanisms of meiosis.
For those interested in the wonders of spindle assembly and chromosome segregation this is sad news indeed. He was a dynamic speaker and an outstanding scientist.
