browsing the dumbphones reddit and while i have no idea what “edc” means, there is something appealing about going back to having a separate phone, camera, mp3 player, etc, even though it would likely be annoying in practice

recently bought a portable compact disk player, haven’t used it in a bit but the sound quality is awesome and collecting cds is so much fun. u get used to carrying an extra thing.
I've also browsed that sub but still haven't solved the two issues keeping me on a smartphone: my job requires an authenticator app and I have a friend who only communicates by Signal
EDC means "everyday carry", which is stuff a person carries with them every day. Wallet, keys, phone would be EDC for most of us, but it could be just about anything depending on the person and what they want/need to be prepared for. I usually have a Swiss army knife with me, for example.
I recently got an mp3(DAP) player, and never realized how not as good smartphones are at just putting out good sound. I still have my phone, but love carrying around something that is JUST MY music. Highly recommend.
After the first or second month,
you get used to just not having those functions. After the first half-year, even your cell phone stops feeling like an essential item.
I've lost my phone for two days at a time and just went "oh well"
I have my phone phone (phone calls, driving directions, photos, blue sky, texting). then another phone for just music and another phone for downloading/listening to podcasts (I don't do streaming) that doubles as my TikTok phone on the weekends.
They can read EPUB, apparently, and will run some emulators once they're jailbroken? Probably just saves having to get a Boox and then a Miyoo Mini and then a new pouch for all of those. :D
For taking pictures? I think a top of the line iphone 16 beats a Ricoh GR III in most people's eyes. There's probably something to be said against computational photography (especially with Paris in the thread) but a lot of enthusiasts have switched away from using dedicated cameras.
My camera go-tos are DPreview and PetaPixel, though they likely cover higher end, albeit portable cameras. DPreview compares models within reviews and has a comparison tool, all of which I found useful. Not sure to look for portable music players; I mostly found niche review sites via…Google 🙇🏼♂️
Gets freaky real quick on American EDC subs.
You'll be, "oh neat, a phone, mp3, amd small toothpick holder in an altoids container" and then notice the US poster concludes with "artisanal pen, mints, glock"
It's not annoying at all in practise; break it all up, diversity bringeth us the quality (I do it, and wish I could bring myself to dump the dumb phone to boot)
its not as big of a pain as one might think! I have my dumbphone & my 'pocket ereader' which runs android. My camera I mostly leave at home. The ereader is nice since the black&white epaper helps negate the need to binge watch and endlessly scroll (to an extent) and encourages me to read more

I tried a Nokia dumbphone a couple years ago but the quality was way way too low to be usable.

OP: here is my EDC as a graphic designer in London: 📱🔦💼😊
John Mclane: omg stay safe brother. I've seen what it's like in London rn on X. Shame you guys can't open carry
I mean there’s a joke in here that men have discovered the concept of a purse and are going crazy with it
Still, it's a great rabbit hole for finding high quality fetish items and then appreciating what you have
