To clarify, time estimates come from when I saw the earliest polls "close" in Newfoundland (low population, so it was expected), and when the last polls in BC finally ran out of long lines of voters. They aren't "official" close times, I just accounted for real-time changes as I watched the voting.

Polls close at 7 in Pacific time, 7:30 in Mountain, 8:30 in Central, 9:30 in Eastern, and 8:30 in Atlantic and Newfoundland. So it’s only a 3 hour gap between poll closing times.

In Pacific time, that’s 4pm NL, 4:30 Maritimes, 6:30 most of Canada, and 7 pm in BC.

Well then someone didn't tell BC that! I saw some polls staying open a bit later than that. Also, here in Edmonton, the poll I went to was open until 9 on Election night.

Seems like the rules got a bit bent Monday night.

Here in Aus the doors close at 6 pm local time sharp. If you are in a queue they usher you into the hall and lock the door behind you. Anyone turning up even 10 seconds later can knock all they like, they will not be let in. No exceptions!!!

No, I've worked at polling booths & there are absolutely NO exceptions. You get ushered in (don't forget we have almost 50% prepoll) and LOTS of polling places on the day. Have seen a supervisor calmly explain to the irate knocker that they were too late. It can be an interesting end to the day.

I did, but I also asked them about Election Day (I had time to kill waiting in line, so I shot the breeze with the Elections Canada staff). But I also live in Edmonton Centre, so of course the polls were going to be open late here to account for the sheer amount of people we have. And they knew it.

And that's what makes all the difference between the theoretical closing time and the actual closing time. It's good that they leave the polls "open" until the line is gone.

I do have to wonder how much overtime these poor elections staff work on election day...
