German satirist Mark-Uwe Kling has a lovely chapter in one of his books about the Bible making a lot more sense when you stop assuming that God is a nice guy.
The thing with that is, given the way most living things and ALL inanimate things behave (physics is a *monster*), it's reasonable to assume that the gods are UTTER BASTARDS.
Though my counter to that is that they were likely going to do this anyway because they are vindictive little shits and this was just the excuse they used.
But there's another one when Calvin accepts that Santa exists out of self-interest (belief = presents) and when Hobbes calls him out on the cynicism, he replies something like "it's the Chrismas spirit!"
