always very funny when a post like this does numbers and the reading comprehension brigade comes in with “ah, this post you wrote about why Mamdani is good is actually about you hating him”

While this method yields a lot of false positives, the false positives will all be humorless dicks with no reading comprehension so it's not a huge loss to throw them out with the bathwater imo
i like how it is you who is the reason why dems keep losing when bill clinton is over here haunting, of all things, a mayoral race when most people were wondering why he was even at the DNC much less talking
also why are they made that mamdani is running against cuomo, cuomo has literally already been mayor. he could just go back to his bog or (god help new york for me saying this) try to take the governorship from hochul (which is probably his longer term plan)
iirc, Mamdani had been running 5 or 6 months before Cuomo declared, so it's pretty ridiculous if they're angry that he didn't just curl up & die when faced with opposition.
America, either intentionally or due to the failure and underfunding of the education system, has generations growing up that will not be equipped to recognize propaganda and fascism when it comes, like right now.
For most of them, it's not that they can't read, it's that they're in such a breathless hurry to score with a hot take that they don't read the whole skeet, and certainly don't take time to parse anything more complicated than "This guy sucks! This guy rules!"
The specific form of illiteracy common in America is, terrifyingly, blended with confidence. Poor readers will skim a sentence and be extremely confident that they've gathered its meaning even when they don't really understand half of the words or grasp the syntax. Vibes-based reading.
Millions of Americans were literally taught to read incorrectly via a process called cueuing and "whole language" reading, where they were taught as children to literally *guess* what the next word would be in a sentence.
happy to report that this is very much not the case in schools today, and at the elementary level in a lot of places the science of reading is taking root
don't get me wrong, it's at the expense of a lot of time spent on SEL and other subjects, but kids are learning to *read*
Ever since I learned about this in the last year or so, I keep seeing ways it can explain a whole host of behavior by usians of the right age group. It's fascinating yet so concerning.
And there's the social media element - especially social media with a character limit & ability to "share" like twitter.
Everyone's watching one another and there's a weird competitive desire to be "first" to reply/share things. That results in short dumbed-down nuance-free "clickbaity" posts.
Over 1 in 5 adults have a literacy proficiency at or below Level 1. Adults in this range have difficulty using or understanding print materials. Adults below Level 1 may only understand very basic vocabulary or be functionally illiterate.

We have never had a Mayor Cuomo.

I’m not going to apologize for having a good vocabulary.
It's persuasion 101, especially with so many Americans having such low literacy rates.
Jargon and complicated/complex words don't persuade. IE: 80%+ of America can't properly define "liberal" even colloquially.
