One of my biggest peeves in writing gay characters (or general LGBTQIA+ themes), as a gay man, is the sanitizing of our experience to the extent to which the characters, story, or setting imply nothing bad has ever happened or could happen to that community. It feels invalidating. So thank you. <3

Man I would love to just talk to you and hear the process behind some of these things. Tevinter is just one example of many of the moral complexity of Thedas. "Free society of mages... except for these other really bad things" it's one of the reasons I've fallen so deeply in love with Thedas.

There was a similar cue in Veilguard which I found pretty cool thematically. A Trans-masc character from the Shadow Dragons who became a soldier because his father told him it's "what men do".

Tarquin's a Tevinter too just like Dorian and Maevaris. I like that a running theme for the Shadow Dragons is that they're an org that's very accepting of queer people in contrast to mainstream Tevinter society being more heteronormative.

While I get why a lot of game settings just take the "homophobia doesn't exist" route for [reasons], I personally find it kind of, "comforting to the point of anesthesia" when it's functionally off limits as a theme. I was really glad to see Dorian's story actually engage with it in the way it did 🥲
