Should older people even *try* going on TikTok? I dunno. I'm tempted, but olds using TikTok just feels kinda... desperate? Unless you just lean into it, maybe. π

If you want to just dip your toe into the water, Skylight Social just launched. It's the AT Proto (decentralized Bluesky tech) alternative to TikTok. It's not going to be anywhere near as big yet, but you should be able to keep your identity and followers from here.
I've found excellent content for all kinds of people on TikTok. Their algorithm is so fine tuned, I never see any of the dance videos or whatever people think TikTok is. β€οΈ My entire feed is art, history, folklore, and international culture videos.
I made my first TikTok account last month to follow a particular account, and I hate it. I hate everything about the app. The lack of a mute button feels like violence. Itβs cluttered and confusing and sends my #geriatricmillennial sensibilities reeling. But you do you π
People can use a social media app at any age. Itβs only desperate if you assume theyβre all begging for something π but maybe theyβre there to be social and have fun.
I feel like I need to have the zoom too close or off center on purpose, record myself trying to find the buttons, filming my feet... all on purpose to make it as painful for the young viewer as possible
