My impression was that EA was never particularly interested in what BioWare fans wanted. From EA's perspective, there just weren't enough of them to be worthwhile. The talk was always about how to expand the audience... not how to please the existing one, who they (wrongly) figured show up anyhow.

The problem is that it's a slow gain (until it explodes) and overwhelmingly it is "spend $100m every time because it might make billions" which isn't very sustainable.
BG3 having an end let me decide to play it!
