I once used the word "sussurous" in a novel - my editor allowed it, but said it was a "piss word". She explained that this related to a writer who'd used the word "urinary": "it's the kind of word you may use once in a book, period. Use it twice and the reader will notice and remember it forever."

It's not rare enough to be signature word, and I don't think there's anything wrong with signature words, either.
If I say "eldritch" or "Cyclopean," anyone who knows those words knows the author.
Today susurrous is used to describe any kind of sound that resembles a whisper: a light breeze through a tree, perhaps, or the murmurs of intrigued theatergoers.
