I find the neutral way the Wikipedia entry says the Germans helped with mine clearing - to overcome recalcitrance they were lined up and ordered to march over suspect fields.

Not everyone experienced the elation of liberation.

Crewmen of the Norwegian merchant fleet, our most important contribution to Allied victory, trickled home long after the parties, to a country that didn't understand nor recognize their sacrifices until too many decades later.

There is a fitting tribute to these Norwegian patriots at Scalloway on Shetland. Small stone pillar with a casting of a small fishing trawler riding the waves of a storm.

IMO, we also must acknowledge and honor the enormous sacrifices of the peoples of the Soviet Union, fighting against our then common enemy.

This does NOT mean supporting how history is used politically today, in Russia and elsewhere

The Soviet invasion of Poland, their Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact with Hitler, and Stalin’s numerous crimes against humanity show that they were little better than Nazi Germany.

Their “Great Patriotic War” against their former ally was shameful. Those who died fighting for that regime are best forgotten

Absolutely, we must acknowledge all sacrifices. My father served for the US Army. They were ordered by Truman to visit Dachau after the liberation to understand what they fought for. I have close to 100 letters he wrote. Every year, the lessons take on new meaning.
