I'm doing a panel here at Lehigh on writing op-eds, audience is academics across discipline to help those who want to do public scholarship. I have my own insights as a journalist and public writer to draw on, but if you take pitches, what are 1-2 things you want folks just getting started to know?

1. Think in terms of news values and news judgement. What makes your work relevant?
2. Editors want to make your piece salient for their audience and consider suggestions accordingly.
3. You both have expertise. You know your field. They know media publishing.
