AI is more like the blockchain, which perhaps got less focus than crypto itself but was certainly hyped as an underlying technology that had uses well beyond crypto. Yes, blockchain has some nice specific uses, but it is impractical/overkill for most of what people do.

The main and HUGE difference I see is that everyone and their mom is already using generative AI on a regular basis, when crypto and the metaverse really were only limited to tech-bros. (Especially the Metaverse. I worked in a closely related field. What a clusterfuck it has been.)

I suspect LLM’s will suffer the fate of blockchain. It has many interesting and legitimate uses, but the insane hype, misapplication, and inherent limitations will make it toxic in public eyes. As blockchain became associated with scams, LLM’s will be connected with stupid customer service chatbots.

Only difference is that AI research itself (not necessarily LLMs) has been in the works at the highest levels of science for decades. The recent hype aspect doesn’t change the significance of the overall technology. LLMs are unlikely to achieve AGI, but it’s gonna happen.

Pretty much. A lot of the hype of AI is just "the AI we made yesterday". The term encompasses a lot of different types of software from computers that play chess to simple markov generators. AGI is both useless unlikely, but AI is real and has been in use for decades

Machine learning isn't new, but that's not what they're hyping here.

"But it's gonna happen" is every vaporware pitch ever.

With enough timespan, sure, probably. But color me skeptical that intelligence is simply a product of electricity, compute, a prediction engine, and fed in data.

But the people building it, who have repeatedly shown they don’t understand humanity, do seem to think that’s all intelligence is. And that’s why they mistakenly think LLMs are about to turn into AGI. Any day now.

The vast majority of AI researchers do not think LLMs will result in AGI. So I agree with you about the hype for LLMs. But the advances in AI otherwise are very real.

At the moment every generative model runs at a loss. At some point we'll find out if the actual use cases are worth the actual costs, but right now it's just an environmentally destructive hype train to probably nowhere.

I don’t know anything technical about AI but because smarter people than I believe I assume there’s a lot of value to be had. But the buzz reminds me of the rollout of “It” that was going to change the world. “It” was the Segway. Changed the world for mall cops and tour groups I guess.
